    Try using a "live CD" to test what works and what not to start with if you are in doubt. If you use something like ubuntu then there will be an icon to install to HardDisk if you are happy. And I think the ubuntu cds you download are all "live CDs" these days. On the latest ubuntu version (in the System menu) there is also an option to create a bootable USB... not sure if you need to actually install first or it just copies the CD image?

    Probably assuming you mean the Huawei E220 and a modern distribution of Linux. It just shows up as a serial device like an old school dial-up modem.

    ive decided to load the os onto a sd card and boot it from that to see how things go first

    In Ubuntu 8.10 these are supported and should be just plug and play.

    You could install from a USB drive (or run it from a USB drive):

    Im using Ubuntu on an old IBM T42 with a 3g broadband modem. After the install it does pick it up as a serial modem BUT once you reboot Ubuntu gets a tad confused and mistakes it for a storage device.
    Use gedit to create a file ZTEMF622.rules to include

    ACTION!="add", GOTO="ZTE_End"

    # Is this the ZeroCD device?
    SUBSYSTEM=="usb", SYSFS{idProduct}=="2000",
    SYSFS{idVendor}=="19d2", GOTO="ZTE_ZeroCD"

    # Is this the actual modem?
    SUBSYSTEM=="usb", SYSFS{idProduct}=="0001",
    SYSFS{idVendor}=="19d2", GOTO="ZTE_Modem"

    LABEL="ZTE_ZeroCD"
    # This is the ZeroCD part of the card, remove
    # the usb_storage kernel module so
    # it does not get treated like a storage device
    RUN+="/usr/src/usb_modeswitch-0.9.2/usb_modeswitch -d 1 -v 0x19d2 -p 0x2000 -V 0x19d2 -P 0x0001"

    LABEL="ZTE_Modem"
    # This is the Modem part of the card, let's
    # load usbserial with the correct vendor
    # and product ID's so we get our usb serial devices
    RUN+="/sbin/modprobe usbserial vendor=0x19d2 product=0x0001",
    # Make users belonging to the dialout group
    # able to use the usb serial devices.
    MODE="660", GROUP="dialout"

    LABEL="ZTE_End"

    Save that in ect/udev/rules.d
    Edit wvdial to include

    [Dialer Defaults]
    Init2 = ATZ
    Init3 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
    Init5 = AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","3ireland.ie"
    Stupid Mode = 1
    Modem Type = Analog Modem
    ISDN = 0
    Phone = *99#
    Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0
    Username = user
    Dial Command = ATDT
    Password = pass
    Baud = 460800
    New PPPD = yes

    and save this. To use the modem open a console and type 'wvdial' or you can put it into your start-up.

    Rather than rehashing another thread there's options here.

    I'm using Ubuntu Eee myself but I like the look of Cruncheee - might install that next week. If you use unetbootin on another PC you can create a bootable usb drive to install it from so no need for an external CD drive.

    I purchased the Medion E1210 from Aldi at Christmas and am now running EEEbuntu on it. As posted earlier I installed UNetBootIn and installed the OS as an image on my USB key and booted from that. Have been playing with other OS's and so far (I hate to say) Windows works the best on it afaic :eek:

    I haven't tried any 3G cards on it but EEEBuntu is based on Ubuntu 8.10 and afaik it's a matter of plugging it in and surfing.
