Fairytale of New York Cover on RTE1

Heard a Fairtyale of NY cover on RTE1 radio yesterday, completely different to any I've heard before. I don't think there was guitar backing it, just some wind instrument (pipes/flute, can't remember).
It sounded like Shane McGowan was on his deathbed talking to Kirsty McCall, or something to that effect! I'm sure it was neither, of course - but the whole thing was spoken, and sounded very poignant, bitter and generally "bah humbug go die". It was great.. :D
Anybody care to help with an ID?

At one stage yesterday there was a Christy Moore cover on the radio, not sure if it was RTE1 though.

It might be in the "name that tune" thread in music forum. Or not.

Shane McGowan would have to be on his deathbed if he wanted to have a chat with Kirsty McCall.

Can't help with the ID but have heard it last year - I think it is two actors doing it. Excellent stuff ...... very striking.

Yeah, think it was released last year or the one before. Also on the pogues big boxset there are alternate versions.

    From the Wikipedia Article -
There is a spoken version, adapted and performed by Gerry McArdle, with Colette Proctor and Aodán O'Dubhghaill, released by EMI, which reached no.7 in the Irish Top 10 Christmas 2000, and is requested every year on Irish radio.

Cant find audio though, if anyone tracks it down drop me a PM, would like to hear it.

That sounds like it okay, but after some googling myself I've come up with nothing. :-(
I'm tempted to request it on the radio and then record it.. :D

If anyone would like to send me their email address I'd be happy to send on an MP3 of that version of Fairytale. I'm the Gerry McArdle who recorded it for Christmas 2000, and there are no more copies left on CD. If anyone wants to put it on utube or itunes also feel free, as I don't know how to.
    Happy Christmas,
    Gerry.

I won't be happy until William Shatner does a spoken word version.

Its Christmas Eve here already and that was the first song I belted out this morning.

So STFU and let me have my moment.

Medical science will surely be queueing up to examine Shane's liver , when he does eventually pass away.
How is the guy still alive ?

Love that song though , and it always cheers me up if it comes on when I am out Christmas shopping.

Really hated Eastenders mock up of it.

I think it was for Children In Need.

    analogue_070 , that's the Christmas spirit.:)

Gotta love Boards.ie for stuff like this. Only here would people be talking about a song, and the actual artist ends up finding the thread and posting.

    Fantastic stuff.

Look Them Straight In the Eye And Say Pogue Mahone.

Listening to it RIGHT now, and fully endorse it. Different lyrics to Fairytale on various takes, weird.

I think Christy Moore does it beautifully too, anyone whos seen him do it live will most likely agree. Normally pays a nice little tribute to Shane at the end too, dreaming of "Sally MacLennane and the Summer in Siam"

I don't care if its overplayed, the MacColl family and The Pogues always results in Win.

Gerry also enclosed this message :

As promised, attached is Fairy Tale of New York,

Colette Proctor, Aodán O'Duill and I recorded it many years ago for a radio programme which I used to do on Christmas Eve, but Gerry Ryan latched onto it in 2000 as an antidote to the truly awful Ronan Keating version. EMI contacted me and asked if I'd like to release it and I said yes, provided all money raised went to St. Vincent de Paul society. WE raised £10,000 pounds, and got to No. 7 in the Irish charts. The smart money tipped us for No. 1, but Kirstie McColl died the day we entered the charts, and naturally, people went back to the original.

If you like this, I'm sure the Society of St. Vincent de Paul would welcome a donation.

I have tried so many places to get a copy of this beautiful version of the song, after I heard it on the radio, but no luck, will it ever be released again,
    I hope so.
