Im looking at getting a laptop... not primarily for gaming but i do want to use it for gaming... and since thats the hardest thing to find in a laptop thats what im concientrating on.

Im looking at a an Acer Aspire 6935g from elara... because it has a 9600gt and they do collections.

I'm not worried about cpu speed, hd size, ram or anything (other then i want to save money on them by buying upgrades later as i need them).

Is this about the best i can do... around €1000 for it, or are their better deals out their (which i can get before christmas)

Everything in laptops these days are integrated onto the motherboard.
What this means is ; some pc games require specific graphic cards to play them and so to play certain games you will have to replace the graphic cards. But with laptops this means replacing the motherboard ( expensive ) because you cannot change the graphics's cards on most laptops.

So if you are going to buy a laptop for gaming I would say DONT unless its is designed to play games and has a very good graphics card (These laptops are expensive).
Buy a desktop for gaming. In the long run its cheaper.

Yes, basically you already know your stuff - if you're shopping within Europe, you're probably not going to do much better than a 9600M-equipped laptop for €1000. There are quite a few laptops that fall into that category (such as the Acers), so just shop around and compare specs. You should also familiarise yourself with the various varieties of that card (GS, GT, DDR2/DDR3 etc) as there will be a big difference in performance between some models.

Im sure I have seen the Asus G50V with 9700M GS knocking around for a little over €1000 on laptopsdirect. I can't find it now so it's possible that im imagining it, but google around for it anyway.

I have seen new/refurb Dell M1730s with SLI 8700M going on ebay and also the outlet for a around €1100-1200 quite often. The card is not as strong as it should have been, but it will still be better than a 9600M, and in Sli a little better still.

You could get a Gateway P-6860FX (or similar, they've a few different model names) from the US for €1000 or under, even after shipping and tax. That has a 8800M GTS so will have very good performance (relatively speaking) and the processor is an easy upgrade. However, you may not want to order from overseas, what with shipping, warranties etc.

Last time I checked LaptopsDirect also have an Asus with 9600GT for under 700 euro, might look at that. The GPU is far more a determining factor in your games the the CPU, so if you're paying several hundred euro for an extra of gb of ram and a 100mhz faster CPU....

    Dabs have a samsung for €800 with a 9600. Think it's the r570.

Yeah thanks for the advice... i guess what im looking for is somewhat impossible especially at a good price.

    Spotted this though. http://www.elara.ie/products/detailsfullat.asp?productcode=ECE1605100#spec

Im using this as my reference guide http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html

Seems to be very little info out there on the 9700m gs... which possibly doesnt exist. Must be some downclocked 9700m gt but then... thats what the 9600m gt and 9650m gt are so confusing.

I guess it compares best with http://www.elara.ie/products/detailsfullat.asp?productcode=ECE1650015#spec

Asus : 9700m gs, Lower res screen (1280x800), 9-cell battery, 2 year warranty
    Acer : 9600m gt, 1080p res screen, 6-cell battery, 1 year warranty

And then theres the lower spec Acer, closer to the Asus for under a grand but still packing the 9600m gt.

Anyone seen any of these laptop in the flesh and care to comment on how the build quality is... because i cant see a lot between them.

I think there is some mix-up regarding the 9700M GS. As far as I know, its the same as the 9700M GT, but there has been a mix up between Nvidia and some vendors in relation to model names. They have even been labelled as one but reported by Windows as another. Don't take this as a fact though, as you rightly say, the Nvidia line is pretty confusing so try and find some benchmarks for that particular model to confirm its performance.

That Asus is a nice looking machine, but it has an awful low res for a 15" these days. They brought out a much nicer machine in the US (G50vt, with higher res screen and 9800m GS) but unfortunately it doesnt seem to be coming to Europe.
