I want to move all my music and video to an external h/d that I can share across my wi-fi, so that wired PCs and wireless laptop can access it without much work. Is this even something that exists? If so, any recommendations for what I should get and where? Before xmas if possible.

You can buy a NAS harddrive that plugs into the network via ethernet and is shared i've had good experience with an iomega one or you can buy an external harddrive and plug it into a computer and share it over the network but the computer will have to be on for others to access the harddrive.

The first option sounds better, so something like this?

    Yep.

Sharing files wont be as fast as if the hard drive was connected through your USB port obviously but if its for PC sharing it makes no difference since you have to go through the network one way or the other. Using a NAS drive you dont need a parent-PC running all the time. Some will even act as a print server, so you dont need a PC for that either.
