I keep reading comments on this forum about the HSE and how they have put a hold on hiring. Where have people heard this info and can anyone post a link or two for me about it? Please. :) Will this hiring freeze have any effect on nursing opportunities?

There has been a jobs freeze in place since September 2007. Jobs are still advertised from time to time, but bosses have to nearly get down on their knees to Admin in order to get these vacancies granted.
My brother qualified as a Dietician last June, but only 4 vacancies came up in Ireland since he qualified- he applied for them all but was unsuccessful at interview. Luckily, he found an agency website (labmed.ie) and got himself a temporary post in the UK. It seems there are plenty of these jobs over the water, and he will be able to work and build up his CV so when this jobs freeze ends (please God!), he'll have a better chance of getting a job in Ireland.
I am not sure how nursing jobs are affected
I found these 2 links Link and Link

    Cheers Kelle. :)

That sucks about your brother. Hopefully things with HSE will be sorted soon for his sake.

I don't really have the option of going across the water... I want to work in Ireland, if I have to work in the UK I may as well just stay here in Australia (I can't afford the time, money and hassle of trying to register in the UK too.) Although from those 2 articles it seems that it affects allied health staff more so than nursing... but I have to do more research by the looks of it.

    No probs.
Here's the HSE careers website. There appears to be a lot of nursing vacancies.

the job situation isnt great at the minute, i know where im workin we are down 1.5 staff nurse and there is no sign of replacing them, also alot of the newly qualified nurses that came out this year had quite a difficult time finding work.

Thanks crowlef2. :) I've heard the same thing about the new graduates having difficulty finding work. Are these issues also affecting the Private Sector?

The ward I'm based on has 3 staff nurses for 29 patients at night. From next year, they're dropping it to 2, and giving them 2 student nurses.

Cheapness = worse patient care (no disrespect to student nurses intended)

So do you have half a nurse instead of two?! :)
