Laptop screen won't turn on

A while ago my laptop's OS (WIN XP ME) became corrupt, it wouldn't load up right at all.
So its been sitting around for a while, and last week I had a chance to take all my files off it. I planned to format and reload the OS, got the OS and software Cds from Dell (they didn't ship with it) and last night went to format and reload.

    Plug in laptop,
    Turn on,
    Insert CD,
And the screen stays blank. Restart, its the same.

Its not like a blank blue or black start-up/Dos screen. Its like its turned off. No light or sign of power at all.
I've removed the cover to see if a connection was lose and it looked fine.
    Any ideas?

Try connect it to an external monitor. I think the same thing happened me before so I connected it to an external monitor and set it back to display on the laptop screen. It's a while back so the memory is hazy!

This blank screen usually happens when a piece of ram gets loose or damaged.
Open up the storage department for ram and make sure they are not loose.
If they are not loose take one out and then try booting with one piece of ram.
If it boots the problem is with the piece of ram you took out. try this with the two pieces of ram.

If that does not work take the battery out and try booting the laptop with just the charger in. If it boots the problem is with the battery not holding the charge.

If these do not work , call dell and get someone out to have a look. It mostly like would be a problem with the power unit or the motherboard

Cormie, External screen won't work. Tried it.
Normally I have to boot as far as the desktop and switch to VGA output with Fn+F4
    Won't show the dos screen.

Mick, its not a problem with booting up*. I can hear the HD and CD drive spinning inside. If I turn it on, wait a few secs and put in a CD, it starts reading the CD.

*(it won't boot but thats a windows problem, the screen was fine before, just paused at Dos)

Try press the FN and CRT/LCD button together? I don't know my help is a bit useless, but I remember having the problem before and I forget what got it working :(
