Preventing programs acting network/internet

This isnt specifically a virus question but sometimes regular software are just as annoying and have "viral" features!

Anyway, programs such as adobe and others which check for updates tend to annoy me. I know you can switch this off usually in preference but this doesnt always work and I still get those annoying pop ups "update ready for install" which tend to slow things down.

Anyway, I uesd to have a program which listed all software on the computer which would "contact" the internet and gave an option to prevent it from so doing.

I cant remember if it was a feature of windows defender which I just cant find again or was it an antivirus software.

    Anyone able to help?

    Thanks in advance!
