This is each team playing each other twice, with 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and none for a loss. Thanks.

If one team wins all its games then the remaining qualifying place becomes a mini round robin of three teams. Each plays four games and one team can therefore qualify with four points (i.e. all games drawn). If just one of these teams wins one single point against the group winner, it would then qualify with 5 points.

Cheers, the fact that you said 4 points is a possibility is a big help too, got that after I posted the question. It's for programming, just making sure I wasn't making a mistake!

haha, was just posing this question to myself this evening as I lie on my sickbed watching Arsenal be shamed. General method for calculating lowest possible second place points finish in a round robin containing n teams with each team playing each other twice? Any takers from our non maths background posters?
