Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

IRCSET postdoc

I am in the process of looking for a postdoc. in Ireland and after lookig at the IRCSET site would really like to apply for funding for 2009 but I am not sure how to go about it. Do I come up with the idea and then get in touch with groups that might be interested or do I get in touch with the lecturers involved and ask if they would be interested and then they provide the research topic?

Would it be a downside to have a DAAD postdoc scholarship under my belt already?

I have changed jobs quite a bit because of my husband moving around a lot but he is settled now, should I mention this just in case they think I'm really flighty?

    I'd appreciate any advice, thanks

I would contact research groups first and ask if they can help but if you already have an idea, pitch it to them as it will make you look organized/prepared.

It would be a significant advantage to have postdoc/scholarship experience, so no worries there.

I wouldn't make a point of mentioning that you've moved around a lot unless they bring it up first. Just explain that you 'followed the science' to wherever the most exciting work was being done, and that you're settled in Ireland now. That's all they should care about. A postdoc is a relatively short commitment for them so I doubt they'll be afraid that you'll up-sticks half way through. And IRCSET won't care at all.

Thanks for the reply, the moving around involved working in a variety of different jobs aswell from secondry school teacher to sessional lecturer at University level which doesn't help. I'm going to email the PI's I'm interested in working for but I don't know what to include? I'm guessing a bit about why I want to apply for IRCSET funding, how I think I'm qualified and how their research blends in with my experience/interests. Is there anything else I need to add?

Hi, Like any job I'd suggest that you find the group that interests you. You could always push for a Stokes (not sure of the next call). For better money I'd advise you to aim for groups with EI funding as it's commercially orientated and less competitive. Results from successful CFTD and PoC applicants are posted on http://www.enterprise-ireland.com/ResearchInnovate/Research+Commercialisation/Commercialisation_Fund.htm under the individual scheme. Worth a few emails at the very least.

Would agree as well on the importance of finding a group that interests you. The major problem at the moment with the IRCSET programme is that the salary is €33,000 per annum which is well below what newly qualified post-docs (€40,000-SFI ) are getting. If you give people here an idea of your research filed we might be able to point you in the direction of some groups working in your area. Not all the uni/college websites would be great with info on research interests.

By the way Jokesetal the call for the Stokes is overdue and what i've heard from several sources is that its being pulled and not sure if it will come back!
