Getting it in Ireland or America

I'm trying to get a PS3 but I can't find any for under 300euros on the Irish sites. My ma's in America so I could get her to pick it up for me while she's there since they're about $400 over there which is about 250 Euros. I think they go down to $300 if you only wanna buy the console too which I do cuz all I want for the moment is a controller cuz I'm gonna hook it up to my wireless network and use it to play films and **** off my harddrive.

Apart from needing a voltage converter are there any other problems with using an American PS3 in Europe?

Do the prices of PS3's go up or down at Christmas? In other words should I get it now or wait a few months.

Does anyone here use their PS3 as a media centre hooked up to their wireless network? Is it far superior to the XBox360 and WII? If its not I might as well just get a Nintendo WII cuz their much cheaper and theres good games for them too.

Also I hear you can install linux on your PS3 and rip Blu-ray discs (videos and games) straight to your PS3 harddrive. I read about that last year though is it still as simple as that?? Note: No I'm not talking about piracy here I have a Blu-ray burner and I might need to transfer stuff from computer to PS3 harddrive.

I have an american Ps3, you do not a step up voltage converter, just plug it in and it works straight away.

Your living in the past with your exchange rate, $400 is at least €300, probably closer to €320

The ps3 weighs quite a lot, Its awkward to bring home, lets put it this way your mam wouldn't have any hugs for you by the time she gets back to Ireland :pac:

You might be better off getting it up north, apparently they have decent deals on them up there

If all your using it for is streaming there might be better solutions available to you.

Yeah apparantly you can rip games and movies in linux on the ps3, but only the movies would be any use to you as there is no way to run a non retail game on the ps3

2 things to remember if your picking one up in the US:
Price you see is before sales tax so add another 7-9% for sales tax
Will only be able to play Region 1 DVD and Region 1,Region Free Blu-Rays.

Argos in UK ut costs like 287pounds. Thats about 325e.

So obviously that makes more sense.

Customs are clamping down at the moment as well so just be aware of that! Last thing your ma wants is to be stuck in the airport with a security guard with his hand in her PS3box...

Both good points, unless shes in delaware (where i got mine :), 0% sales tax)

Also I find less European blurays are compatible with usa ps3s than the other way around (or at least it seems that way, nearly all of my American ones work in my uncles irish ps3, while no where near as many of his work in mine, could be the luck of the draw though)

$400 is €300. so when you can get an 80gb ps3 with a game for €400 its hardly worth the hassle to save 30-35 at best.
