    Any thoughts?

I personally think it's off the wall to suggest this. It flies in the face of our legal system. It seems a bit knee-jerk and made with good motive but ill informed.

There was a fairly recent bail case (upheld by the SC) where because the accused was charged with s.15A to the value of several million, bail was set @ 100k or something crazy like that.

I don't think the legal aid proposals for serious criminals are that unreasonable from a public policy point of view. However, any money they have illegally gained should ultimately be taken by CAB rather than paid to the lawyers.
