What's the attraction to anything... really. Everybody has interests that people will ask "what is the attraction to that". I would rather play computer games than watch TV. Considering the amount of crap that is on TV. They can be very entertaining, games that is. However games like World of Warcraft are very addictive and can be bad for you.

I've never played it, but I'm curious..... Lots of posters on here seem to get addicted to it. I like addictions :) May play it some day

I reckon my bro can play at least 8 hours straight of that Guild Wars game. It can tell you your total amount of hours spent online. Last time I asked him, it was scary. I'll try find out.

"Shaun got attached to the people in the game as if they were real people. When we made moves to finally end the game he got upset about it," she says

Well in fairness most of the people in the game are real people. I dont mean NPC's, obviously, but the other players are real people. Playing with other people is way better than playing against the computer.

As was said before 5 hours is nothing. My gf got up on Saturday morning around 9am, started playing around 10, and finished playing around 11..... PM!!!!

13 hours pretty much straight. Go GF!

I know plenty of "normal" 20 & 30 somethings who are as addicted to Football Manager as a lot of other people are hooked on WoW. I managed to kick my ChampMan habit and haven't gone back thank Christ.

Online games can be great fun, was a CS addict for 4 years, up to 15hrs a day at my worst. I had just gotten over the game when WoW came out and swore I'd never play it out of fear of falling back in that hole.

Don't regret a second of it though!

i always felt people who played theses games were either young male teenagers or male early to mid twenties. I know - very narrow minded of me. Reckon once you get a demanding job, girlfriend, family etc you have to knock it on the head.

I love videogames. My sig show's just how much time I spend gaming, for people who know what that figure represents.

That said, I don't play WoW, even though I've a few friends playing it who constantly try to convince me to play it. If I said to them that people thought 5 hours a day was a lot they'd laugh.

A weekend where you don't play WoW for at least 12 hours a day is a weekend wasted for one of them. She's talking about how her boyfriend has BB at his parents house, so when they visit at christmas she'll still be able to play.

Its just a hobby at the end of the day. Though when one gets consumed by a single hobby whatever it is it's pretty bad. Ive had dark Championship/Football Manager days.
People are too quick to knock it as pointless but so are a lot of hobbies. Look at most olympic sports. Spending hours upon hours a week trying to run 200m faster than anyone is pretty pointless in the larger scale of things too. Even if it's more healthy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,255 ✭✭✭anonymous_joe

Used to play, mostly with my ex. Then she became my ex so I stopped. ^^

It's possible to play too much, but fúck it, you can do anything too much.

I wouldn;t call it a hobby, I'd call it an escape from reality

Whatever happened to the good old days when kids would pick up a drug habit and spend 5 hours a day monged out of their brain watching teletubbies and masturbating in front of door to door sales men? Kids today.

virtually every hobby is an escape. To paraphrase the great Terry Pratchett, the important thing is that yuo are always escaping to, not escaping from.

Terry Pratchetts problem is trying to remember WHY he's escaping in the first place.

I spent the alot of time playing these types of games up until not too long ago, they are essentially mental heroin. They set up scenarios where the effort required to get positive feedback is minimal, the only thing you need to get a reward/complete a quest is time. Of course as the game progresses, more and more time is required.

Loosely speaking our brain responds to "reward" by the release of dopamine, the more times a reward pattern is followed the more a habit is formed.

They are as close to heroin as you can get without sticking a needle in your vein.

Of course that said, you never really win. MMO's are the proverbial "Carrot on a stick", you spend all your time chasing something you will NEVER really reach.

I quit, but for a long time I'd be horrendously bored with the whole thing, only played because my ex still did. When she became the ex I stopped playing quite soon after. She didn't, but that's another story.

WoW is quite addictive, but the people who play are not anti-social misfits they're usually fairly normal.

That's right, it's only a game...your just playing that extra hour cause you want to get that epic chest piece and your guild won't be doing this raid again for a whole week. But then the hour turns into 2, then 3 and now your going to be late for work in the morning. But oh when the chest piece drops doesn't it feel SO GOOD?!
