My Thomson Sky HD box is out of it' one-year warranty. It's not working properly so I need to get a new one. Do I have to go to Sky? Don't want another Thomson. Are there any alternatives?

Have wondered the same question myself......and judging by the website they charge €149 for a new sky + box.

*Free Sky+ box offer for new Sky digital subscribers. Only one discounted Sky+ box per customer. Additional Sky+ boxes and existing customers charged at full applicable standard price of €149. Offer ends 18 December 2008.

If you find out, can you let me know aswell.:D

What's the problem with it? It may be possible its repairable. Common complaint with the Thomson box is faulty PSU, and a repair kit can be bought from Satcure.co.uk to name one company (I believe he uses superior components to those that failed in the first place).

Otherwise, maybe ring Sky, and when they tell you it'll cost X amount, threaten to cancel if you don't get your way. Note however, that this method doesn't always work, and they could call your bluff!

Sky would not talk to me as I ordered the sub/box/install package from a TV retailer.

It has a number of problems. Cutting out, the "No Signal" that takes 3 or 4 poweroffs to get rid of, one input not working so can't watch and record at the same time, not responding to remote or box controls and needs to be powered off.

This is the second dish. The first one was in the warrranty. When I sent it back it took two months to get this replacement. It's worse that the one I had. I think it's somebody else's return. Just something to get me beyond the warranty period.

Anyway, I've had enough of Thomson boxes.

The box would still possibly be worth repairing though, I'd say.

I'm inclined to think it's a PSU fault.

Hi all, I hope someone might be able to help me. I have a Sky HD box which when the power is left on or on standby all is ok but if the power is switched off at the mains every time you switch it back on after booting up sound will work for a for a few seconds and then cut out. 9 out of ten times when you switch off power or do a full system reset it will be fine until the next time the mains power is switched off. I know your saying don't switch off the power then but that's easily said when you have someone else who switches off everything at night! The 160GB version

    Any suggestions welcome:confused:

I bought a HD box off of Ebay secondhand in July and it went tits up in October. I wanted to downgrade my sub back to SD because the box was dead. No joy. I did manage to get a free service call out of them and they replaced the box free of charge.

Not bad considering I bought the box on ebay.

Sky HD are not cheap to replace. my uncle has one that broke down xmas day and rang sky which were charging him around 350 euro to replace..as that is how much they are to buy outright

He needs to threaten to cancel and ask for a free service call. The box will be replaced free as part of the service call.

Even a service call costs less than 100 euro.

Don't let sky off the hook easily.

if you ring em up and look to cancel they will send a service engineer out seemingly depending on who you get to talk to on the phone. be persistent with em. i am not guaranteeing they will send one out for free but its worth the try as others on here have pointed out it works a lot of the time rather than do without your subscription.

If your looking to cancel be warned do so at your own risk because they sometimes wont call your bluff and will cut off your subscription!!

Even if they call your bluff, you have to give 30 days notice so they won't be cutting you off straight away in any event.
So you can call them up in a few days and reinstate your sub.
