Ireland ranks fourth dearest in price survey

IRELAND IS the fourth dearest place in the world to live and shop, according to an international price comparison survey.

Although prices are falling for many goods, they are not falling as fast as in many other countries, the survey by cost comparison website PriceRunner.co.uk shows.

Ireland was the most expensive of the 23 countries surveyed for condoms and ranked in the top five for other products such as vodka, bus tickets, Coca Cola, takeaway coffee and a Nintendo Wii. Prices for some consumer electronics in Dublin are more than twice those in the US.

Last year's survey ranked Ireland in sixth position, but this year only Norway, Denmark and France were more expensive.
China, followed by Hungary, were the cheapest countries for a basket of basic foods, consumer goods and entertainment goods. The UK ranked seventh in the survey.

"While Ireland's individual prices have decreased, overall it has become more expensive than in 2007," said Peter Carlsson, general manager, PriceRunner.
"With the recently announced increase in VAT to 21.5 per cent on certain goods, the Irish are being squeezed further, Ireland looks set to stay an expensive place to live and shop."

He said that the survey showed Ireland was now the most expensive place in the world to buy condoms, with a packet of 12 Durex costing €11.04 in Dublin, compared to €7.93 in the UK. The same packet costs just €4.12 in Shanghai.

A pack of new baby nappies dropped €2 in price to €7.79 from last year, but the same product costs just €6.22 in the UK.
A Big Mac, used by many economists as an international barometer of prices, costs €3.30 in Ireland, according to the survey. The same product costs just €1.22 in a McDonald's in Shanghai and €3.78 in Norway.

A bottle of Absolut vodka costs €20.46 in Ireland, compared to €28.06 in Norway and just €6.17 in China. Meanwhile, a trip to the movies checks in at €8.22, down from €9.50 last year. By contrast, a cinema ticket in Lithuania costs just €3.63.
The price of cigarettes is also on a downward trend, but taxes and excise mean a pack of 20 Marlboro Lights varies in price from €7.48 in Norway to €6.72 in Ireland and just €0.98 in China.

The US emerges as the place to go for value on consumer electronics. A Nintendo Wii costs €166.71 in New York, €450.66 in Dublin and €458.41 in the dearest country, Lithuania. New York was also cheapest for an iPod - €199.20 versus €247 in Dublin.
San Francisco offered the best value for a MacBook Air, at €1,111.17 against €1,497.89 in Ireland.

Great to be told once again, that almost anywhere else in the world is cheaper to shop than here.

no surprise really, we are the victims of our own greed. the governments "success" in getting the country into a so called great economy was built on a false pretences. only denmark and paris are dearer than here in my experience.

    c*nts.

We really need to work harder and push for first next year.

I mean, from 6th to 4th is good, but we need to demand better.

Well it was a really stupid way of telling customers to keep the money down south. What should have been said is something like "Hey, people of Ireland, I know that we rip ye all off, but if you go up north and spend your money you will further worsen the economic situation of our state. By spending money down south you will inject much needed money into our economy. :)

Take into account supply and demand, I bet in New York there were more Wiis than here, the demand may still be high but the supply might be a lot more than in Ireland. Tax is a big factor in this too.

Ok so we compare the prices and we seem to be getting ripped off. We know that we are getting ripped off most of the time, but compare the standard of living, minimum wage and over all life style of Ireland and every other country. Would you b!tch so much if you had cheaper products but were only paid 4 euro an hour? Doubt it...

Read it again AJ. It's YOU that has made the boo boo here son. You have made the fatal mistake of not reading the whole sentence.

Pigheads grandad was the same. Was always only half reading sentences. Killed him in the end. Sign read "Suicide is good for nobody" Poor old grandaddy never got past the third word.

I'm fairly sure that in this situation Pighead is wrong.

If the sentence read Ireland was the most expensive of 23 countries surveyed for condoms.... then I would accept that there were potentially more countries surveyed for the other items however because the sentence reads Ireland was the most expensive of the 23 countries surveyed for condoms.. - the presence of the the underlined 'the' implies to me that there were only 23 countries surveyed overall.

    Regards.

Yep, spot on AJ. Absolute cowboys over there in the Irish Times office. Pighead's been saying this for months now. Good to have you on board buddy. Together we shall improve the declining journalistic standards of this country.

It's not Pighead's answers that are wrong. It's the questions.
The remedy for wrongs is to forget them.
    PS You spelt "wrong" wrong!

Suspicious figures there, or else the Dublin-Cork gap is getting wider cause you can buy a wii down here for just over 200....nothing like fake statistics to make a study completely worthless.

Those Wii figures are completely wrong.
Wii is $250 + sales tax if bought in store, a Wii is €240 including VAT in Ireland.

Even with the most optimistic currency conversion its nowhere near $470.

Switzerland is suppose to be one of the most expensive places to goto. For example, thing is eating out over there is about the same as here, really puts how bad Ireland is.

Indeed. You can make a survey give you what ever results you like. I just did a survey and 100% of Irish people surveyed say the Irish times is a rip off.

But seriously comparing prices with China - who gives a damn how cheap stuff is in China at least we have human rights.

btw, all those people heading north where everything is cheaper, why don't you move there? Or even better why not move to China? See when you actually think about it, some places are cheap for a reason.

Thread on this in consumer issues too http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055437967

These "shopping baskets" are always BS. They go into centra in the middle of town or something. I bet I pay less than every single thing listed.

A more interesting thing would be asking 100 people on the street about stuff they own and what they REALLY pay. e.g. I get own brand milk & eggs, probably half the price of the ones in their baskets, I bought my memory cards online, about 1/4-1/6 the price it would be in argos or currys. I wait for tescos 25% off deals and THEN stock up on beer or whatever.

I might save up a load of money and move to some cheap ass country, Then build myself a huge compound with armed guards to stop peasants attacking me, Whats the cheapest place to live in now? If its on top of a mountain...That will be even better.

The price of cigarettes is also on a downward trend, but taxes and excise mean a pack of 20 Marlboro Lights varies in price from €7.48 in Norway to €6.72 in Ireland and just €0.98 in China.
Where did they get those prices?
Now I could understand if this was an average price, but cigarettes are all sold at a standard price.
I don't know exactly how much marlboro lights are, but sick cut purple are €8.10 (after the sneaky 5c increase last week) and other cigarettes are no more than 10c either way.

I'm calling bull**** on the entire survey.
