little big planet connectivity issue(s)

    Hi.

I picked up LBP on saturday and popped it in the PS3. As soon as it was ready to roll and had installed it pointed out that my internet connection wasn't going to afford me the full functionality of the game. (I didn't notice at the time, but i couldn't play 'cooperatively' - i could just play other peoples levels)

I've not played any other network games up to now, and had been able to download from the PSN store, i'm using the PlayStation Home Beta and genuinely thought there was nothing wrong.

In other words, the constant threads here about NAT 2 types, etc passed me by completely. :)

Come Sunday, I decided to do something about this. Sure enough, my NAT type was 3, and i decided to try and upgrade it to 2.

I think i've done it right. I've set a WEP key on the router. I've assigned a fixed IP Address to my PS3. I've created rules opening the five (i think) ports suggested on www.portforward.com citing the IP address of the PS3.

The PS3 says i'm now using NAT type 2. I can still sign in, therefore, to Home etc, and i can see the status of other peoples tropies etc. The trouble is that the last two nights i've not been able to connect to the Little Big Planet network. At all. In other words, a few days ago, i could connect and do a small number of things, despite getting a message telling me i ought to fix my setup, and now i've, um, 'fixed' it, i get nowt.

Has anybody noticed a difficulty with connections recently. If it's a problem that everybody has, then i'm not too pushed. If there's something else that I should be tweaking, i'd be more than grateful for any help.

    ta muchly

I think their servers are down, I wasn't able to play any online levels the other day and I've had no problems before or with any other games!

I thinking I'm seeing a trend here. The router supplied with Eircom broadband is ****e. I use my own Netgear router and have never had any of these issues.

I was playing last nite with no probs, its possible you are playing at peak times when the servers are under a heavy load.

thanks folks. i'm using the Perlico one. Zylex i think. It could be that i've got a crap router alright. i'll happily concede to that.

the heavy load thing sounds plausible too. I'd have thought, but could be wrong, that in order to *prevent* the 'you're not using the right connection' message coming up, that the system tries to fire out messages on the ports used and if it's able to, then you don't get the error, but i've no idea.

I've seen on other message boards people complaining that the servers don't handle the loads too well alright, and as this is a 'young person' friendly game (more than, say, GTA) we're more likely to see these kind of problems.

I shoudl point out that whilst i said i'd not used multiplayer before, i tried (before doing the NAT stuff) playing GTA on multiplayer and kept getting chucked out. After the sunday tweaking, i was able to play GTA no bother.

(well - i say 'no bother' - i got fragged, flamed, 2nd amended, run over, shot and blown up to kingdom come REPEATEDLY over 45 minutes. But the connection stayed up the duration of it :D )
