Shafted on EBay/Paypal

Was bidding for an item but didn't win. Received an e-mail from the seller saying the person who won the bid wanted item shipped to Nigeria and was a scammer so wasn't willing to do so. Asked me was I willing to take the item. I negotitated a new price anyway and was awaiting the mail saying you have been successful on this item. Nothing was forthcoming so i mailed him/her.
They asked to be paid through Paypal directly as EBay would charge them an extra £4.90. They said i was covered through Paypal anyway, which i was under the impression i was too !

£250 later and still no sign of goods. Seller corresponded on EBay mail 4 a few weeks but since i raised a dispute on Paypal, have heard nada.
Have upgraded to a Claim also since.
Spoke to a Paypal rep and they reckon my chances are slim because i haven't won the item through EBay.

You'd think id have some comeback even through EBay as they should be able to view the correspondence between us
Seller had 98.8% positive feedback too. Probably all feedback he/she put up against him/herself !

Anyone else have such an experience ?

You go against E-bay policy (never buy it outside of Ebay if offered) and then expect Ebay to protect you because you got scammed?

As for Paypal, beyond being part of Ebay, they only offer such cover on specific web sites for a reason. If not I can make a transfer to my second Paypal account, take out the cash and then raise a claim on the first for the money back.

On a £250 sale, an extra £4.90 in fees, would hardly be much to worry about, this should have set alarm bells ringing for you. You should have offered to pay an extra £5 if he was worried about it, worth it for the peace of mind.

Your only hope is to raise a charge back using your credit card. This may or may not work, all you can do is try.

Always get a seller to invoice you through eBay for anything you buy. Even though it's not 100% effective in covering you, it's the only protection they offer.

Yeah, dealing outside ebay is risky..
The seller could have got his original 4.90 by by reporting non-paying bidder for the Nigerian guy, and made you a second chance offer.
That's the way it's normally done.
With 98.8% feedback you wuddn't expect this though..
I think chargeback is yer only option.. - non-receipt of goods.
