Reality Shows - When Are They Recorded?

Was watching The Apprentice and was thinking, when are episodes of reality shows recorded in relation to when they're broadcast?

Surely there can't be too much of a gap, lest they risk the winner being revealed early (à la Ray D'Arcy)...

Well, i noticed that in last nights episode of the apprentice, one of the customers in the 3G shop was buying one of the latest ipod nanos, which were only released around the 9th september i think, and it was surely a week or so before they hit the shelves in ireland here. So, that gives some sort of a timeline i guess

Brenda was interviewed by Ray Foley today and said the boardroom that was aired lastnight was filmed 12 weeks ago! She starts the job in January.

i would imagine that the term "weeks" in the show should not be taken literally. I cant imagine the group doing a task for 2-3 days and then sitting around for 4 days waiting for the next one. I would think the full "12 week" show was filmed over 6 weeks - from mid-August to October.

A mate who works in the the UK told me that they've have just finished filming their version of the Apprentice, giving nearly 5 months between wrap and competition, but I think it shows in the edit to be honest.

Unfortunately in Ireland most shows are filmed far too close to their air date for various reasons (the 'reveal' being the least of their worries) it's usually down to money. Certain broadcasters drag their feet when commissioning, I know of a few high profile shows that got the green light with very short notice resulting in a scramble to get something/anything on air.
