After being at an interview last week I was finally offered the job yesterday afternoon.. No salary was discussed at the interview but when he mentioned the salary yesterday it was less then I was hoping. I asked him was their any movement on the salary and was told he'd have to get back to me on it and would get back to me before the end of the day (yesterday).. I've still not heard anything from him and I'm worried now.. Any suggestions??

Not a whole lot you can do unless you want to ring them. Salary really should have been discussed at interview though. Was there no salary mentioned in the ad for the job?

All it said in the ad was €30k+ which gave me the impression that €30k would be the minimum. Not what they offered. I'm thinking I might email them tomorrow but now I'm thinking they might have offered the position to someone else.

are you clear in your mind that if they will not offer you less than what you want whether you will take the job ?
it might be an idea to be just incase they ring you up unexpectedly

And why would they offer anything more then the minimum?

I thought they were offering lower to chance their arm, I said I'm delighted to be offered the role but was thinking of slightly higher salary. Just didn't realise it would take so long to get back to me!! They mightn't offer me what I'm looking for but hopefully they increase their offer a bit, sure I'm worth it :) Think I'll send an email today.

Because it's normally dependent on experience. Someone more experienced would be worth more, it's that simple.

Miss B - is this a commission based job? That might explain a lower base salary. 30+ could mean OTE. They might have to check with their finance people if they can bump up the offer, though it would be strange if they didn't have some sort of discretion there.

Remember that your best chance of a decent pay rise is generally when you change jobs. So if they are not going to stump up now, they are not too likely to down the road either.

As samhail says, make up your mind now if you will take the job at the lower salary - but make sure you're not compromising too much if you do.

I don't disagree with that, but it was in regards to this:
All it said in the ad was €30k+ which gave me the impression that €30k would be the minimum. Not what they offered.
Which implied that a company saying the salary range is 30k+ should not offer 30k during these times and based on work ads in general (esp. if it comes via an agency) they tend to be, aah, optimistic in their calculations (i.e. 100% bonus, benefits etc.).

Thanks for all your helpful comments. I don't think I'll be taking it unless the salary is improved, I have ample experience in the field & job position and to be honest it's a bit insulting to move backwards down the salary ladder (I know times are tough but I'm not going to make them tougher for myself by taking less money)
I contacted them earlier and the decision maker has been away so they should be back in contact tomorrow. I confirmed to them that I would be happy to take the position once the salary had been reviewed as it would involve me taking a substantial pay cut.. Only time will tell

If they are going to low ball you from the start it doesn't bode well for your future in the company.

I'd say they tried to get me cheap but didn't realise I'd say no... God loves a trier

id say they are going to offer the job to someone else but i hope they dont as you do probably 'deserve' more but in the way the economy is at the moment i very much doubt they dont have a long list of suitable candidates

edit; assuming they dont offer you the money you want if you are unemployed i would strongly recommend a re-evaluation of your worth in the current climate. if you have a job your relatively happy with and are just looking for something with more money and prospects then you are lucky and dont have any reason to lower your expectations

Yes - everyone is thinking that they people should be taking less money so they will try. Employers employ people from their interview result, not because they have a right "price". If they really want you, they'll pay up.

Seems like thats what happened. They contacted me and offered me what I was looking for. Start in 2 weeks :) just proves you shouldn't settle for anything less
