    JOEY STYLES

PWINSIDER.COM EXCLUSIVE: OH MY GOD - YOU WON'T BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENED IN IRAQ
    by Mike Johnson @ 2008-12-09 09:52:29
One of the most newsworthy events that transpired on World Wrestling Entertainment's tour of Iraq last week took place nowhere near any of the cameras that were filming the tour. I was stunned at hearing the following story over the weekend and initially chalked it up to being just an urban legend, but as it turns out, it was completely accurate.
Retired WWE announcer (and current WWE.com personality) Joey Styles punched out former WWE champion JBL in Iraq during an altercation between the two, busting JBL open under the eye.
No, that is not a typo.
As the story was initially explained to me (and all versions I've heard since have matched the original report I was conveyed), JBL made Styles something of a target because it was Styles' first tour of Iraq for the company and was hazing the former ECW announcer.
I was told JBL was trying to bully Styles with a lot of condescending comments and actions, including allegedly spilling a drink on Styles on purpose. JBL was more or less pulling a lot of the shenanigans that a lot of of the performers in the company can't stand but deal with since he has the political stroke of being a tenured veteran.
Several days into the tour, JBL (who by all accounts had been drinking) did something that caused Styles to physically retaliate in defense. A number of wrestlers stepped in between them and held the two apart. When JBL broke free, he went towards Styles, who "nailed him perfectly with a pretty good shot" according to one witness, laying JBL out and blackening his eye. There were no further incidents between the two on the tour after that.
There were a number of performers who pointed out to me that the story was something of karma coming back to bite JBL in the rear because his antics had caused Smackdown talent Palmer Cannon to quit the company during a European tour (and Cannon wasn't the only victim of JBL's hazing over the years) as well as the famous ECW One Night Stand beating of the Blue Meanie during the PPV closing brawl inside the ring.
At last night's Raw in Philadelphia, the story was the talk of the day among wrestlers, who were amazed by the incident. I was also told JBL was acting completely subdued at the taping, something absolutely out of character for him, as he knew the story was making the rounds. Styles, meanwhile, was trying to downplay the incident to those who brought it up to him at Raw.
It was considered doubly embarrassing for JBL among the wrestlers since he was so involved with setting up the Iraq tours.
In a strange way, some theorized the incident would get Styles over with Vince McMahon because it showed his "toughness" and could pave the way for his return to TV. I have no idea whether Styles' cameo last night was part of any direct result of the "Iraq Punchout", as it was termed to me.

Please God let this be true.

    Heres how Wrestlezone put it:
PWINSIDER.COM is reporting that on the recent WWE tour of Iraq, WWE.com writer and former announcer, Joey Styles was the object of repeated harassment by JBL (John Latfield) with a lot of condescending comments and actions, including a report of JBL spilling a drink on Styles on purpose.

JBL has a long history of these type of harassments. On another overseas tour he harassed Smackdown's Palmer Cannon (Brian Black)(Brian Mailhot) rsulting in Cannon flying himself home from the tour.

After several days of this Styles finally went after JBL and wrestlers held them apart, but JBL & Styles broke free and Styles nailed JBL in the eye, busting him open and blackening it. It was reported that JBL had been drinking.

Rumors that JBL screamed "Oh My God" while clutching his injured eye were likely just made up by me.

I'm not sure why WWE management puts up with these harassments, but history has shown that that it has and likely will this time too.

    WTF?

We need rovert or fozzy to clear this up, it would be immense if it was true though:D

Joey Styles would have history with pwinsider as the guys that now run it used to run 1wrestling.com which I think he had/has a stake in.

It's wrestlers being on a tour, so I'd believe it.

The question wouldn't be "Is it true?" But more "Why would it not be?"

    It's the internet.

In saying that I'd say it happened.

f4wonline.com says that what PWInsider.com reported is basically the full story:
Regarding the JBL/Joey Styles story that is up at PWInsider.com, there isn't much to add to it that wasn't reported there. Basically, during the Iraq trip JBL was in full hazing mode with Joey Styles and Styles could finally take no more. There was a scuffle, a bunch of people jumped in to break it up, JBL, who had been drinking, broke free, and as he was charging Styles (yes, Joey Styles) punched him right in the face and knocked him down. JBL ended up with a cut and blackened eye which was somewhat visible under heavy make-up yesterday. About the only thing we can add is that apparently there were a number of different things that JBL did to him during the course of the tour, all of which would have set a normal person off, some of them verbal and some of them more physical. JBL spent most of Monday night by himself in the locker room, being very quiet and spending most of the time dinking around on his Blackberry. There will be more on this in tomorrow's edition of the Observer, likely including a look at other JBL-related incidents including the infamous beating of Blue Meanie at One Night Stand and incidents that led to Palmer Cannon quitting. JBL also dumped a bucket of ice on Lilian after she fell asleep on the plane, so he was in quite the mood. Or he just watched Coyote Ugly.

I guess Joey can't be de-pushed or get stiffed in the ring, he had nothing to lose :pac:

I gotta say, i f*cking hate Joey "OH MAH GAWWWD" Styles, Always thought he was a sh*tty commentator. But i give him all the respect in the world for standing up to JBL in this instance. :)

Nice to see a story that wasn't broke by Dave Meltzer for a change.

Fair play to Styles anyway, JBL deserved it by the sounds of things.

 Why is it nice to see? What difference does it make who breaks a story?

I think it makes a slight positive difference as well. Meltzer, Keller and Alvarez (leave it VR) are the few wrestling journalists who have an air of legitamacy to them that when they break a story it's usually true so it's nice to see others emerge

PWInsider have broken plenty of stories though. They were the first to report on RVD and Sabu being arrested and Gabe leaving ROH, among others. Jeff not being allowed on a flight a few months back too

Seems like no one believes it until one of ye post a quote from Figure4 or Wrestling Observer. As Bubs said, it's a positive change.

But PWInsider are very rarely wrong with what they report. There's no need to doubt them and wait for more "reliable" sources! Just for future reference :pac:

Ah yeah, I know that but going by what others said (and even the op) they seemed to be waiting for "confirmation". Maybe I read their posts wrong, in fact looking back I perhaps inferred the wrong information.

Anyways, lets give Joey his props :) I love Styles, I think he's great commentator, a great personality, and all them ECW tapes wouldn't be the same without him. Spaghetti legs anyone ?

There's a reason for that alan, it is the most reliable source (they're both one in the same now, strictly speaking). As opposed to several crappy sites who take most of the story out of context and claim it as fact.

It's that simple, and not really up for debate. :)

It's hard to believe that JBL at his age is still pulling this crap. I mean it was bad enough when a young guy like Orton was doing it but JBL, especially with his track record, should really cop himself on.

I'm surprised Vince doesn't sit down with him and tell him to sort it out. Then again maybe it's difficult for Vince to sit down with him seeing as his head is wedged up his ass...

Some more info from the Observer:

JBL was being quiet on the trip over to Iraq so some wrestlers were teasing him about "whatever happened to the old JBL?", his weight loss and him getting old. So he got a few drinks into him and started getting at Joey

JBL and Joey got into a scuffle and some wrestlers pulled JBL away. While they were pulling JBL away, Joey hit him while his back was turned (Joey's the real heel of this story :pac:)

The reason JBL poured ice on Lilian is because they had all decided that nobody was allowed to fall asleep on the flight, and Lilian fell asleep

Vince wasn't happy with the story getting out because he was hoping that the people on the plane would keep it quiet from the other wrestlers. Naive :pac:

    Plane Ride From Hell II!!!

Goes to show what an ass JBL is, that said, there was no way in hell Styles was gonna be able to get away with smacking him one face to face.

    They're both cowards. :)

Oh, the title of this thread is false too, JBL didn't get knocked out or even knocked down. But he was bleeding a lot
