Practical bikes

I was in Frankfurt at the weekend and I had a look in a few of the bike shops (as you do). What amazed me most, was most of the bikes being sold there were really practical city bikes. 399 euro got you a bike with: dynamo headlights (and dynamo hub), internal geared hub, rear rack, decent mudguards and decent tires (Scwhalbe Marathon Runners, if I remember correctly) which are all good components for a commuter bike. Where in Dublin can you buy bikes like this? Why do most of the shops seem to think that most of us are only interested in road racing?

If you look in most shops in Dublin or indeed what most people commute on it is mostly entry-level hybrids and cheapo MTBs. Road racing is a bit of a niche, TBH, over-represented on this forum. Historically hub gears have been quite expensive compared to entry level derailleur systems.
