POker Highlight of yer year???

Now that yer awards are out of the way (fix, fix)
Here is an entry I made in my e-dairy on the irish Open earlier this year, ...perhaps we can get some other highlights from peoples year. Mine is nothing compared to most but it was more the enjoyment than the money that made it my highlight so If anyone else has a wee highlight add it on.

I had AA on the button, I flat called, the BB pushed I snappo'd, he throws over KK triumphantly, to avoid any appearances of a slowroll I tell him I've got him bet with AA, he shrieks OMFG . K comes on the flop, he pounds his fist into the table with delight, I puke half way up my throat, this was the Irish Open, the one event where you don't need to go out early , nobody cares how you go out, they just care about who is left in, the turn brings another K , he's got me buried now, I'm fkd after the 1st hand of the irish open I'm out FFS, there is no justice. I get up to walk away, trying to take my beat as manfully as possible but inside I'm ready to make a gelding out of any spritely colt that comes my way, suddenly a loud noise like a siren fills my ears, I jump up and find I'm actually not even at City West yet, It was a fking dream, PHEWWWW, somehow the shock of the bad beat stayed with me and I went into the event as if it were a freeroll. I end up cashing for 6.5K and was really disappointed in the end, but when I hit the sack that night I
remembered my bad beat and how it wasn't really a dream but a memory from a different tourny, reminding me that the IO is like any other tourny so play it like that and that was how I ended up playing it.
I may or may not play the event again but it was the poker highlight of my short poker career in terms of enjoyment .
Mickey mouse I know. I could win 100k and get less enjoyment. The atmosphere, the crack, the field, just the general buzz was brilliant.

I played the Scalps in the Fitz last Friday, got moved table shortly after the break and, lol and behold, an apparition of my long-dead cat greeted me in Seat Six. I had to rub my eyes several times and mentally confirm that I had not imbibed any strong hallucogens with the sausage rolls but yes, it was Rambo (I suck at naming pets), larger than life and winking back at me across the felt. The emotion of our reunion was too much to bear and I busted out soon after but what was mere poker at a time like this?

ty YULETIRED, a truly memorable poker moment.

Easy one for me. Cork, dream first outing for Brucepoker

    from blog

Over all I'm delighted with the result on a number of levels. It's my second biggest cash after last years Irish open and in the intervening time I have put myself in a good position on a number of occasions but fallen short so it felt good to be there at the death. A chop on such close terms is as good as winning it in my mind and the way I played over the three days pleased me no end. I came as close as possible to the perfect tournament I think, never all in the whole way through and only raced for circa 50% of my stack twice. I'm also very pleased with the level of concentration and focus I achieved over the three days.

Good story but the winking part is a total fabrication. What about your shocking night in the SE that forced you to give up live poker, blogging, watching come dancing, proably into buying a cat to calm you in your breakdown time as you worked yer rocking chair. Details please stunty, it's the end of the year , it's time to swap stories. (Lowlights as well)

Final tabling GJP DS & London would rank high although i would have to pick Vegas even though i lost it was a poker highlight for me.

Mine's gotta be Phantom Lord finally becoming a real poker player.

That and following Ted Forrest around one of the casino's in Vegas while he was being refused money over and over again, I don't know why but it made me feel good about myself....

Drogheda for me (duh). If I had to be more specific and narrow it down to one hand, it'd be the one I played against Joe Beevers on the FT (which I believe was a big turning point for both of us). The feeling of exhileration that coursed through my veins the moment his (onbious) overpair hit the muck will take some beating.

knocking the 2nd best tournament player in Ireland out of the Brucepoker main event

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 762 ✭✭✭Duff Man Jr.

At the IWF I was grinding 2-5 for the weekend, and not planning on playing any higher. On the Sunday night I went for a look around the room, there was a 5-10, 2.5k min, 6 max game starting and they only had 5 players, there was no way I was playing but I seen I would have position on a huge English Fish.
I locked up the seat and went to get my chips from the 2-5 game. I put down the 300 or so and before I had a chance to take out cash a railbird informed me that it was 2500 not 250, lolz all around.

    Seat 1 was Trong Evsing,
    2 average English Guy,
3 bald Scandie(dunno who he was but he seemed really bored, so I presumed he normally played higher),
    4 Physco English guy,
    5 Good Tag Irish Guy,
    6 Me

First hand bald Scandie straddles, folded to me on the btn with J9s, bald Scandie calls, He chk/calls a Ace high flop and chk/folds a blank turn.

For my next 3 btns I get AJ, AK and QQ and win all 3 hands without showing, however physco English had taken to blind raising to 50 after the 20 straddle.

Next button he makes it 50 again and asks me if im going to raise my btn again, I get AA and make it 200, he calls. Flop is 569 with 2 hearts, he bets 300, I make it 1k and he calls. Turn is 6h ugh, before I even think about what to do he insta ships for 1200. I tank and call just because he is a headcase. he just said "ffs I need a 4" and mucks a blank river.

Nothing happens for about 2 hrs and I limp with K8 for 10otb, average English makes it 40, Tag Irish calls and I call out of boredom. Flop is K84, checked to me, I bet 100 average English chk raises to 400. I'm thinking he leads with AA/AK and QQ/JJ are very likely, I make it 1100 and he ships(We both had ~5k), I go over it a few times and KK is the only hand that makes sense. Before I fold the degen in me relieses I can play a 10k pot with top 2 for 500(I bought in for 2500 but 2k was already profit) which has to be +ev. I ask for a count, the dealer says 4k, I ask "more?" but English guy thinks I said call and goes to turn over his hand triumphly. I dont see his hand but this always means the nuts and I fold. He had 88. I think Id have gone broke if he led the flop.

Physco English leaves soon after to play someone hu for 5k, he dropped like 8k. The game broke pretty soon after.

I ended up 1600 and really enjoyed the game. Most money I ever put up for a game and got that kind of rush I haddent got from poker since I started playing.

Everything about this hand including the thought processes are really poor

Anyway I can't think of any highlight, 1 of the problems of no limit cash. It's just 1 long game.

Think it was back in Feb...had day off from work the following day, so met Neill Kelly and Connie O'Sullivan in Dublin and we decided to go to the Fitz for the €75 f/o...all the usual suspects were there and a few guest appearances, including Graham Matthews (creator and writer of Father Ted) his incredibly hot girlfriend, and Benedict Wong (English actor - google him and you'll recognise him). Managed to get two players all in pretty early after filling a boat 8's full of Q's. Nursed my way onto the last two tables to sit beside the incredibly hot priestess for an hour or so. Almost lost the lot when I again managed to get two players all in PF...I hold AK, one guy instacalls and this Wong character tanks for about 3 mins, he's got a pretty big stack (just over half what I've got) he makes what turns out to be an horrendous call with KJ. Other player tables AQ :) Wong spikes the knave on the river  I tell him those chips are only on loan as he apologises. Kept it solid and picked off some small stacks to get back to a challenging position. Final table, Wong is directly to my right and all the time I'm zoned, I keep saying to myself "don't get involved with him til heads up and then own him" can't remember much of it til 4 handed but ko'd Connie with trip 8's after cc to the river, Connie shipped, I take it down and he's out. Last 3, deal suggested..."Na"...go to heads up with Wong. I look down at AK again OTB, I raise 4bb he calls. Kxx, he ships I instacall, what does he table - KJ! :pac::pac::pac::pac:

I win the tourney for around 1.4k.

Kelly is down doing his stones playing cash. I'm off the next few days so decide to take him up on his offer to drive home to Waterford. "Should be a bit of a laugh" I say...he loses the fookin ticket for multi storey (3.00 am) AFTER we pay for it, between the machine and the car. No sign of it. We pay the man again to get out.

He puts on the sat nav, drive around Dublin for half an hour while I say just switch the fookin sat nav off and take my directions. He decides to take sat nav instructed right from the middle lane down by the ha'penny bridge and proceeds to nearly cut us and a taxi load of people into the freezing cold Liffey on a freezing cold February early morning. This is a great laugh for Kelly.

We finally get on the motorway and the night/morning is topped off with us ringing about a dozen poker clubs around the country, at least three or four times apiece, putting on thick pikey accents telling them we are just around the corner and need directions to get there and have they any blackjack cos we have 8k apiece and are "mad for a game". :D

    Happy days.

Interesting thread. As I started reading down through it, I was thinking away about what would I put up as my highlight. And then BCB goes and spoils it all by making up my mind for me. I'm only repeating what Noel said, but the buzz at that Marty Smyth final table at the WSOP just had to be experienced to be believed. The song captures it perfectly

    "Just one moment in time"

I still get hair raising tingles when I think back to that day.

    + 1

that night in Vegas was more than a highlight, it was emotional to any Irish person there for many reasons. It was my first time in Vegas and I was awe struck by the occasion. I made some great friends from that Vegas trip.

It really has turned into a "munster v allblacks 78", there was only 30-40 there and in years to come 100's will of claimed to be there. it was unbelievable, bonds made forever.

well done marty and tom again.

Does it beat the feeling of being nominated for an award by Nicky Power?

Actually, now you mention it, it doesn't. Nicky was my original poker hero and the reason I started playing, and to go from nowhere to being nominated by him was the equivalent of if I started writing songs and in a year or so David Bowie was nominating me for a Grammy.

Also, to be less self centred about this, witnessing Rob Taylor and Nicky being in the Macau chop was a thrill too. Both had come through tough character testing stretches, and both are players I have immense respect, admiration and affection for both as players and human beings. Was particularly satisfying to see Rob dismantle the French guy headsup, given that he had earlier told my English friend Mark that he wasn't keen to agree a chop until Rob was eliminated as he regarded him as the weakest link.

I broke my wrist playing football back in August so I had plenty of time for playing....three days later I came 7th in the 80k on stars and took around $2k, was playin regularly every day and was happy with my game....a couple of weeks later I came 2nd in the 50k and took home $5k...was up a nice few quid which helped alleviate the pain of my bandy wrist. I know it's not a live story....haven't got to play much live this year.

Some good stories, congrats to all who have done well this year.
