Choosing a Mac laptop...

Don't know much about Mac laptops at all myself, have only ever bought Dell but my girlfriend is looking to buy a Mac Air notebook. She does quite a bit of photography in college and would need a decent amount of storage space.

She'll be using applications like photoshop and other image editing software so I suppose 3gb RAM would be useful? 2GB at least. Excellent portability is essential for her. Anyone know much about Mac laptops? Would she be better off looking at something else rather than the Air range perhaps?...(She's in America and looking to spend no more than $1700). thanks for any advice...

Replacing RAM in the MBA is much of a no go to be honest. It would be wiser to go with the MacBook or Macbook Pro. Seeing as portability is an issue, rule out the 17" MBP. Seeing as she'll be working with image manipulation, a high resolution would be welcome. This leads to the MBP 15" model (1440x900). The MacBooks have a resolution of 1024x768 (the last time I checked!). Screen real-estate is a biggie for any sort of video/image editing, IMHO. Whatever about the matte versus glossy screen argument.

I thought macbooks had a res of 1280x800?

They do, they have a widescreen. It was the ibooks that went up as far as 1024x768 afaik.

But I'd second the 15" MBP for a photographer.

On general principle I'd say stay away from the MacBook Air, you're probably not past the first generation of them and frankly for the price you don't get your money's worth. For serious graphics work the MacBook Pro is probably the way to go, preferably going for 4GB of RAM and the higher clockspeed...and make sure to get student pricing on it, you'll be able to cut the price down significantly that way.

Good stuff, thanks for the advice! I was thinking the Mac Air had to be a bit too much design over substance alright...
