    hi janet,

don't know the canon but on all other cameras there is a don't use flash option? just switch to that, you may have worked it out by now?

There should be a symbol on the controls on the back of the camera or within the camera menu. It looks like a flash of lightening with a line through it. Pressing that should stop and turn on the flash.

According to the manual of the SD750 you cannot turn off the flash as long as the camera is in Auto mode but will keep on using the flash if it believes the light is too low.

You will have to change to any of the other modes and you will then have the possibility to turn it off.

Not trying to be a smart-ass, but can't you block the flash by covering it with your finger?
