Query about Motor Tax

I've read thru some of the 75 pages of the Motor Tax FAQ and had a quick read of the government websites. I still have one question...

If I buy say an '05 1.6 Diesel (~130g/km), will I have to pay €150 in tax or will I have to pay €445 in tax... this new law seems stupid if I still have to pay €445, why would I bother going for a diesel then? I could pay less tax on a less green 1.4 Petrol...

I'm sorry if this has been covered before!

€445, the new rules do not apply to any car registered before 01/01/2008. In any case, the difference in road tax between a 1.4 and a 1.6 is so small as to be negligable in terms of your overall ownership costs.

    Thanks!

I thought so. That's kinda disappointing... €300 a year is a significant saving if you choose to buy a second hand diesel for about the same price as an equivalent second hand petrol car.

Road tax is based on when it was first registered in the State.

If you are buying a second had 05 car in the republic well then you will be charged on the 'old' system.

However if you import the car from the North or mainland UK then you will be charged at the new CO2 rates ( provided that the car was not previously exported from here)

    Hope this helps

The difference in road tax between a 1.4 and a 1.6 (both 2005) is only €108.

    Wrong.

Any pre-08 car is based on old TAX system.
However it will be VRT'd on the new system.

i really amazed by the amount of people that have been misinformed about this. the Gov Tax website must not be very clear.

Not sure if this is the right place for my bugbear, but here it is:

I drive a 2003 turbo diesel Carisma with a 1870cc engine, and my son-in-law drives a 2000 micra with a 1000cc engine. My car does over 50mpg (17.7 kilometres per litre) and his does less than 40 (14.1 kpl), yet I pay 626 euros per year road tax and he pays 185 euros. Why should a far more efficient vehicle pay nearly four times the road tax?

Happy 4th anniversery to this thread.

Motor tax is an unfair system whether it be the new system or old but any tax is never fair anyway.
