wmbeijing.com sending emails to my contacts

Somehow my email contacts list was accessed and an email was sent from me, trying to sell electronic goods from wmbeijing.com. The first I knew about it was when I got a few message failure notices in my inbox.

I scanned for viruses and spyware scans and my computer appears to be safe. How did they do this and how can I prevent this happening in future?

Similar thing happened to my old mans hotmail account. Also wondering how this happened? Phishing scam?
