I have eventually got around to purchasing my first shotgun, i bought a clean second hand o/u 20g lumar.

What make/load/size would be best for phesant/pidgeon/snipe/woodcock

I have been using a friends gun for a while, it was 12g and allways used 5/6s with a 32g load

I know that there is less choice available, and im not quite sure whats out there

32g 7's would be the best bet.

what ive used this year myself are 32g 9's and 10's. remington field load. ive shot hardly anything yet this year, but the 10's are the business on pheasant. woodcock etc.

Crikey! I wouldn't like to fire too many 32g loads through a 20 bore (Poor shoulder!), I've used Eley Grand Prix 23gm AND 25gm (they're available in 6,7 shot size).

You buy a 20 Bore because it's light and I've found it perfect for walked up game shooting.

had a twenty there for a while, fired a fair amount of them!

6'2" big build - so itd take a lot of them before id feel it! would you not try 28 gram loads?? used them at clays and they done the job! my sister was hitting possibles with them?? shes 14:eek:

The bottom line is; you buy a 20 Bore to walk with all day, Eley makes 23 and 25gm loads for game shooting because it suits the gun best. If you want to shoot heavier loads use a 12 Bore.

I see the weight as a major advantage, long days walking and all that.

But what do i loose out on with the smaller load?

i would not use a number 10 on any game , going to the field noting more than a 6 .i have heard all the bull about shooting game with lite loads .a cock pheasant at 30 odd yards flying away ,pissing into the wind shooting any thing more than a 6 ,the 20 bore is very capable feld gun .if i shot a lot more of woodcock and snipe i would like one .john lambert has a 28gram load for them also he has one of the finest beretta 20 i have ever handled sliver pigeon ,fecken lovely
