UPC DVR issues

    Hi there,

    I recently got the DVR box (a Thomson 6000) installed by UPC and my initial impression is that it is great but with a few annoying issues which I hoped to find out if they are known issues experienced by other people.

    First, I have noticed that when displaying the mini-menu (by pressing the OK button) the Page Up and Down buttons on the remote don't go up/down channel blocks as per the older box(Pace). This means that if you are at RTE1 and want to get to Sky Sports you have to press the right arrow button multiple times - very annoying. A missing feature or something wrong with my box/remote?

    Next, within the mini-menu when the current and next program info is listed I would have thought that the down arrow key should display the next upcoming programs, again as per the old box. However, it simply loops between the two displayed programs.

    I have also had a few instances when playing back a previously paused program and fast forwarding through the ads, when I press the play button the picture is from the recorded program but the sound seems to be taken from the live broadcast, i.e. picture and sound are out of sync.

    Finally, it would be great if there was some way to get a recorded program off the DVR, either to a PC or USB key. Presumably the program is saved as a mpeg file on the hard disk, but there are no instructions for using or connecting to the USB or ethernet ports at the back of the DVR.

    Thanks,
    Seamus

    I have this box as well, and indeed have the same gripes about the limitations of the mini menu. It seems to be a poor interface design.

    I haven't thought yet about getting a recorded program off the DVR, but I suspect that you could go the long route and connect the box to your PC, then possibly browse it from there, and save to a DVD or USB key via the PC?

    These problems are both normal, unfortunately.

    AFAIK the USB does nothing. There's no known way to get the recordings off the DVR outside of the analogue video output (composite or RGB from SCART). Whatever's on the HDD is probably encrypted anyway.

    I presume UPC know about these 'problems' and are working to update the software to fix them. By the way, does the software on the DVR update automatically whenever a new release comes out or is manual intervention needed, or do we have to ask for an update?

    Updates are down the pipe so should be automatic. In the new year we will get new cards and its possible that may have hiccups such as missing channels (will take approx 6 hours max apparently to be sure).

    Hi - can anyone tell me where the infrared point is on the UPC DVR mediabox? I have a Slingbox and I cannot for the life of me find where the remote control receiver is located on the front of the box. Because It has large wide glass area it is very difficult to locate. Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

    Marc

    I have my video sender infrared about 2 inches in front and slightly right of where it says UPC. Left hand side.*

    * Directions assume facing DVR.
