I've just suffered this. Sony say if I go back to the point of purchase they'll replace it.

Has anyone had this problem? Did you get your system replaced?

Will there be an issue because I've a 40gb and the shops probably wont?

It happened to me back in september and i bought the PS3 in January. So i brought it back to gamestop and was hoping to get an 80gb replacement but they had a few 40gb still there. So they replaced just the console itself for a brand new one, no bother at all .

Great I got mine in gamestop too. I don't mind getting a 40gb for the 40gb, planning on buying a 500gb hard drive anyway. Thanks for the info.

Hasn't happened to me yet (touch wood), but if it does, do I need a receipt to exchange it in GameStop?

    ...of course?

You need a receipt to do anything, anywhere. Be reasonable, sorry it just seems so obvious to me. It is your proof of purchase-you could have bought it from Tesco for all they know.

That said Sony seem, and this is only based on what I have read on boards, less fixated on a receipt for obvious reasons-i.e. it really is all the same for them whilst Gamestop would only want to go through the administration costs (time or otherwise) with consoles they actually sold.

    KEEP YOUR RECIEPT PEOPLE!

    Yeah, silly question in retrospect.

Thats not the point. If someone walked into the XV I used to work in with a ps3 with no receipt I would just give them whatever Sony numbers I had and send them on their way.

Don't get me wrong. If you don't have your receipt for whatever reason then do try-Im just saying I don't think they HAVE to legally deal with you anymore without it.

Failing all of this ring Sony. A guy in the Big "Anyone else experienced the Blu-Ray Of Death....." topic called Whiterebel in particular has said Sony didn't want a receipt.

Im telling you, I really want a ps3 now but the main carrot in waiting for a price cut is that it won't feel quite as bad if the thing breaks down on me after 12 months (outside warranty). I wonder how the 80gb are doing fail rate wise?

Yes, they weren't overly pushed on the receipt. If you had it, enclose a copy when sending back, if not, no pressure.

Yeah I can say that's right. My ps3 suffered the bd death last week, rang sony blah blah blah asked if i had a receipt, I says no. Got a letter monday from them with a number to ring, rang the number and a courier picked up my ps3 yesterday. You do however have to pay the shipping fees.

Are there any warranties issues with buying it up North? I mean will Sony give me guff if I try to get them to collect a ps3 bought up North in Dublin?

Im considering buying one up there this week and saving myself the 50e.
