I want to buy a coat in Arnotts and I was just told over the phone that it will be reduced by 20% in this Thursday's sale but they were unable to tell me until then how much it will be reduced by on the sale beginning December 27th although they have said it's usually a further reduction.

Does anybody know how much men's clothing is usually reduced by in Arnotts in the after Christmas sale?

From my experience it depends on the brand.
Some brands offer 30% and some 50%.

Do they normally have a sale this early in December or is it just because of the recession?

I'm not sure if I'd be risking it being gone if I were to wait...

I will be more than 20% come 27th Dec. You are sure of one thing that it's not going to go up.

You need to think on your feet here!

    It's a recession, soooooo

you buy it on Thursday with the 20% off, then, you keep it nice and neat in the bag with the receipt until December 27th, THEN, if it's cheaper on December 27th, bring yours back, get a refund and buy it again!

ORRRR, buy it on Thursday, keep the receipt, go in on December 27th, buy the cheaper one, bring the cheaper one back with the more expensive receipt and get a full refund of the 20% off price.

    Phew.

LOL you're a criminal master mind.

I don't think I could do the former because they'd know what I was doing. I like the latter strategy though!

    EDIT

But how can this work if they won't give me cash back? I don't want to be stuck with €220 of Arnotts vouchers.

they will give you cash back, it's their policy to give a full refund, not sure how long you have to get the refund though, however it would be clearly stated at the point of sale.

I resent the fact that you refer to me as a criminal mastermind, I am simply suggesting that you make use of their refund policy :p

How exactly will it be clearly stated, on the receipt? I can't imagine myself asking the teller if this is the case.

Also, and I'm not saying you're wrong because you did say policy, but they're under no legal obligation to give a full refund unless the product is found to be faulty.

it will say on receipt, refunds within 21/28 days or similar...

It will say it at the till point, there's always a sign, it will also say it on the back of your receipt. Once they have stated that they have to legally give you the refund, even if it's not faulty, because they have "entered into a contract"

Method number two is cheating/fraud (bit like yer man on the other thread with the DS lite), although you will be nice and warm for the Christmas.

A lot of places will NOT give you a refund on sale items - store credit only sometimes. You should make sure you can get a full refund before you buy!

You: "What's your policy on returned items? Do you give cash refunds?"
    Teller: "Yes/No"
You: Is it the same in a sale, or is it credit only?
    Teller: "Yes/No"

They are not going to figure out your evil plan simply because you're enquiring about their store policy.

Don't most places just give you the current selling price as the refunded value and not the price per the receipt?

Not M&S. They give you full whack back and say there is nothing illegal about bringing an item you bought before the sale back for refund. Then you can buy the same item in the sale. See daily mail article about last months sale.

it all depends on their policy but Arnotts will give you a refund of what you paid.

If anyone is heading in there before about 2pm tomorrow can you post if there's anything decent on sale?

Looking for a Henri Lloyd jacket or hoody.:D

I used to work in Arnotts, people bring items and then re-purchase them for the lesser sale amount. They always have a smug smile on their face when they do it, as if they were the first person in the world to have ever thought of it

But keep in mind, you're not entitled to a refund just because you want one.
