Not much to avoid in Boston. I was there last year and loved it. Wife was there in January and had a brilliant shopping trip.

Wrentham Village is the main outlet place near Boston, but to be perfectly honest, if there are sales on downtown, it's not worth the bother to get out there. The main areas in Boston are Newbury Street and Downtown Crossing. DC is a bit like Henry Street, but Macy's is there along with TJ Maxx, Marshall's, Filene's Basement and DSW.

Touristy things include the Aquarium, the Duck Tour (don't know if it runs in winter), USS Constitution, Fanieul Hall (spl?). Further afield, if you're into it, is Salem. Cape Cod might be nice too with snow.

I'm jealous- I love Boston! Its been 10 years since I was there, and the place to avoid then was Mission Hill (not that anyone told me, I only found out when I lived there that it was nicknamed "Murder Hill"... but it wasn't too bad.) Generally crime wasn't too bad in Boston, and I believe that its still like that. The Prudential Tower had some ok shops back then, check out http://www.prudentialcenter.com/ They also have a great Xmas tree there, be sure to visit it in the evening if thats your sort of thing (we don't get Xmas trees like that here- Australia- so it was a novelty for me.) The Boston Duck Tour was pretty boring, tbh... better to save your money and do the Freedom Trail instead... if you like walking. Be sure to have Clam Chowder at Faneuil hall market, its the best! And ice skating at The Frog Pond at Boston Common also something to do. Salem is great for a day trip on the train, its really pretty. :)

Fanueil Hall was lovely to wander around - especially in the evenings. In fact lots of evening hanging around down by the harbour is recommended.

We took a trolley tour which was pretty good.

I wouldn't bother with visiting Cambridge/Harvard, cos it was pretty skanky.

Definitely wander around the Beacon Hill area, if you get a map that has the Freedom trail and the Black History trail marked on it, walk both of those. The houses in the really fancy neighbourhoods are amazing.

The Italian quarter bit on the North side (I think?) is lovely in the evenings and seems like a great place to have dinner and drinks.

If you're into seafood, the old Union Oyster House is super old fashioned and atmospheric. Overpriced, but lovely all the same.

Salem was alright - but the Witch trial themed museums are pretty universally rubbish. Really don't bother. If you have seen The Crucible or ever even heard of the Witch trials then you don't need to hear the same stuff repeated. The Pirate Museum is spectacularly bad.

Basically Boston is super small, so you can walk everywhere. I've only been in the summer, but it seemed like it would be really atmospheric at Christmas time.
