Skydigital box failure

    Hi all,

First post here, so apologies for my newbness.

We had a Sky digital (bog standard no +) box replacement approx 1.5 years ago due to the original (which lasted for ages) going tits up. The newest one is a Thompson box and has decided to got tits up now too.

I phoned Sky support when we got the no signal being received message (code 29) and they took me through a series of menus to check the signal strength which they claimed was very low. After a reboot we had most channels working perfectly and some with interference. I was happy enough with this at the time and they said to get an engineer around if it happened again.

Since then it has fallen over again with same problem so I phoned our local Sky engineer realign the dish because of the reception issue.

When he came out he plugged in his tester and immediately got 96% signal so he claimed it must be the box that died. I can't believe a relatively new box (which was €280!) has failed in only a year and a half. They want €250/300 depending on if we want Sky + for a new one.

Is this how much they cost or are we being ripped off here?

    Thanks

Sky have a SkyPlue upgrade for €99 or something I think.

I've no time for them anymore, any time I had problems with reception/signal etc their solution was always to try and get me to buy an upgrade

Sky just told me that the regular digital box costs €250 whilst the + box is €149...?

You could pick up a second hand Sky decoder on Adverts.ie for €35 or €40.

I thought Sky directly, charged 120eur or so, to fix any problem regardless of what was wrong, including replacing box if needs be with a refurb.

Thomson boxes are not known for being reliable. If you are getting a new box, get a Pace. If buying second hand, again buy Pace, EXCEPT their 2200, 2500 and 2600 models (these were prone to tuner failure).

Gonna go for the Sky + box might as well as am not interested in buying a second hand one, its for others in the house - I hate TV :)
