Price Difference between shops!

Has anyone noticed the amount you can save by shopping around? Also, isn't amazing how much some shops charge you when just down the road I can find someone selling it for a lot less...

This all stems from my shopping trip yesterday!

Pair of Homer Simpson Character Slippers:
    €15 in Dunnes Stores, €28 in Debenhams......like wtf!!!!! :eek::eek:
Oh but Debenhams have a 20% off sale at the moment which brings the price down to €22.40 which is still €7.40 more than Dunnes who are selling them at a non reduced price.

Anyone else got examples of this???

It's when shops have the same prices you should worry (cartel)

you should check out online shops (in UK, Europe and further afield) and see the price difference (even with shipping costs) - much greater again... but maybe thats not comparing like with like.

If you want to buy most goods at the cheapest price you need to hit the web. I have seen this consistently over the past number of years. It is rare that you find a shop on the high street outpricing online stores.

    Ebay is also your friend!

The shop in Bray dart station sells coke at citycenter prices... 1.55 or maybe 1.60. I don't recall exactly as I refused to shop there any more... The vending machines on the platform are set to 1.20

At my local spar, they pur "Spar Value" tags on certain prices. Almost without exception, these items are a rip off.

They are advertising pedigree Dogfood at the moment with the labels, it says "Only €1.10" or something. they are about 80cent in Tesco.

Wireless keyboard and mouse at Harvey Normans on sale for 135 Euro.
Exact same thing on sale at PcWorld a drive down the road, the price is 55 Euro.

4 gig sd card on sale in camera shop for 199 Euro!!!
exact same thing in same town - different shop - 99.00 Euro
I bought the exact same thing in Dublin on O'Connell st camera shop - how much? 39 Euro!
    Frakin' rip-off Ireland for you!
...and now the tight arse sods who are ripping us off, are the loudest ones crying for help - ye reap as ye sow suckers!

Stuff Cowan - he can shove his patriotism up his arse.
I'm saving my money and going somewhere where I won't be ripped off.

    Free market?

Supply and demand doesn't set the price, how much you are willing to pay does. If a retailer offers a product at a particular price point and enough people pay that for the shop to make a profit why would they change it?

It's this crazy thing called 'competition'. Apparently it's quite a new phenomenon.

You're confusing what Cowens is asking you to do. He's not asking you buy the item for €199. He'd be perfectly happy that you bought it for €39 in Dublin. You say 'Stuff Cowen' but you have 'shopped around', found the cheapest price here, which the government is happy with.

It would be more worrying if there wasn't a price differential between different outlets.

why is it only now that people are realising that it pays to shop around?

Weird one I saw the other day was on play.com - I know they are great for dvd prices and saw they were the same for electronics such as laptops in the past. Out of curiosity I priced the Lg Viewty mobile as I got one last month. It was 100 dearer on play.com than in Dublin shops and the girlfriend just bought the Samsung Tocco which was over 100 dearer on the site than the shops here. Found it strange.

Here's a better one. Few months ago I was in Footlocker on Grafton street Stephens green end and pair of runners were 178 euro. Again I was just pricing as I haven't bought a pair in Ireland in 9 years. I went to the other footlocker on grafton street and the same pair of runners were 150. Explain that one.

Well one buggy that I bought in the last week was 130 EURO + p&p (another 30) from Britain.
The exact same thing in Ireland was minimum 350 EURO.

If Cowan can give Irish work and contracts away to Britain as reported, we can cross the border to stop being ripped off by our own!

Because money is now tight for the once extravagant tiger cubs.

    Good point.

That's why I love being constantly broke. I shop around for everything. Even vending machines when I'm thirsty.

I find that if you tell the shop that its cheaper elsewhere they will either beat the price or match it!

This happened to me recently, Saw a LCD HD TV I wanted to buy in one place and got it priced in 3 other retailers, I went back to the original shop and gave them the prices not only did he reduce it by €400 he beat the lowest price from another shop by a €1.

So get your banter up to speed on what your looking to buy! AND BARGIN BARGIN BARGIN, you will win in the end!

I can't see this working all the time then. Would probably be met with a, "right so, go there instead" if it were me.

Yeah, I used to buy my gear off Anto for 5000 a kilo. But now I get the exact same from Knuckles for only 3500....

Well if thats the case, you then go to the other shop and get it cheaper! You still win!

Now this isn't going to work on supermarkets where you want to argue to price of peas and frozen chicken nuggets! It usually will work on electrical retailers, clothes shops (ask for a discount) I bought 2 pairs of trousers the other day which were not on the sale rack, but with a bit of cheek i asked for a discount as i was buying 2 pairs, and they gave me 20% off!
