Just watched Dark Knight on blueray....(Pic quality)

Just watched The Dark Knight on blueray. The picture quality was startling. I have Cars and Wall-e on blueray and they look amazing but this is almost to be expected since it's CG animation at it's highest level. They were always the movies I showed when demonstrating the picture quality.
TBH I never saw a huge difference in quality between DVD and blueray on live action films. Never saw this whole "It's like the difference between video and DVD" quality difference that we were all told about and some people seem to harp on about. Always thought "Yeah, it's better but........".

But now I did....... I'm not going to go on about the film itself 'cos each of us have their own thoughts on it (I loved it). The picture is just amazing. The heist (Filmed in IMAX) is just fantastic but the entire film looks SO sharp.
The helicopter caught in the lines and as the joker walks out of the hospital and blows it up

It's my new demo disc :)

    The
    hospital exploding
is probably the best thing I've seen on bluray. Also the tunnel chase scene looked great. If only the whole film was in IMAX :D

Yeah saw it in IMAX during the summer and those sequences looked absolutely fantastic: the only shame was the cut back to regular quality for the rest of the film :(

Will have to try and see the Blu-Ray at some point though.

Watch the 'Sunshine' Blu-ray.. it's breathtaking and kicks the arse of all other Blu-ray's I've seen (so far).

I still think Wall-E is the best PQ Blu-Ray release so far.
TDK is a great but no perfect release, complaints about aspect ratio and too much DNR, EE.

Oh yeah, haven't got that on BD or DVD yet even though I enjoyed the film. I bet that looks amazing alright. Must check it out.

Yeah, Wall-e's the best PQ release IMO too but as for liveaction I just thought TDK was amazing. Finally think it's worth splashing out now on BD for new films (still not going to replace my DVD collection except for the big hitters: LOTR, Starwars (again damnit) and other big, showy movies. Not much point in getting The Snapper on BD :) )

Agreed. If ever there was a movie that was overhyped it was this.

By the end of it I was: "Is that it? Meh"

This thread is not about the movie. As a matter of fact I said that in my OP:
I'm not going to go on about the film itself 'cos each of us have their own thoughts on it
It's about the quality of the BD transfer and how it compares with other liveaction and animated transfers. Which is why I mentioned Pic Quality in the name of the thread. Sheesh. :rolleyes

Ahhhh so its not a thread about the Batman Begins DVD then?My bad.

"blueray"..... "Pic quality"....."I'm not going to go on about the film itself 'cos each of us have their own thoughts on it"....... "I still think Wall-E is the best PQ Blu-Ray release so far.
TDK is a great but no perfect release, complaints about aspect ratio and too much DNR, EE."........

It was originally a discussion on the picture quality of this particular liveaction move on HD stating in my OP that I was impressed with the picture quality over other liveaction films I have seen on HD. I gave a 3 word opinion on the film itself and explained that the thread was NOT about the film but about the transfer. Other people put their own opinions on the pic quality. The only talk about the film as a film was you and the replies to your post. If you want to talk about the film itself and complain about the amount of threads about it then fire away and post on the other threads.
Basquille mentioned the superb HD transfer of "Sunshine". Had I seen that in HD before, I might have started a thread discussing that. As it was, the first film I saw with an eyecatching HD transfer was TDK

Got my copy from amazon today ,want to watch it over the chrimbo though.
Does anyone know whats the story with the two aspect ratios ? it says it's 2.4 and 1.8
Is it a menu option between the two ?

You are just been pedantic.I could start a thread about the new criterion release of Salo, and about the transfer of the new release of Salo, and about the extras on,you guessed it,the new release of Salo.By your logic I(or anyone) could start multiple threads about essentially the same thing.

If its not about the movie then this should be in the technology section.

Whatever anyway, let KH or one of the other mods decide.

The PQ is just fabulous. It is really good. Beats the PQ on Rambo which is also fantastic I have to say.

Maybe you are right. Maybe it should be in the tech section. You are right, I was being pedantic in that I was surprised about the quality of the picture and was commenting on the fact that this transfer was exceptional IMO. I'm sure there have been threads discussing whether one particular version of a DVD is better than another. If the mods want to move this to tech then fire away. Bloody hell!

It's a good thread ,for lots of people this might be a deciding factor in buying one film or another.
I was hoping this was going to remind of when I seen it in the cinema ,seems so.

Put this on Friday evening with our new puppy on the couch.

I had the TV at normal volume (not overly loud) and the first sound of the film.. the glass window being broken in the bank scared the crap outta him. And he was hiding from the gunfire! :D

The bank scene looks phonemenal it must be said!

Watched it myself last night and was impressed with the Imax scenes alright but as thy went back to the regular ones I was a little disappointed. Don't get me wrong, the quality was still good but the Imax scenes are exceptional !

Does anyone find the speech volume a little low compared to the action scenes ? For the first time I had to put my amp on Night Mode as I needed the volume up loud for the conversations but then when the soundtrack and actions scene kicked in the roof was nearly raised !

Did I say I disliked the movie?Ehhh,no,I didnt.Terribly overrated(i thought) but not the worst movie Ive ever seen.My gripe is to do with the fact that 3 threads had been started(and a 4th has since appeared)to do with the release of TDK on dvd, maybe slightly different in content - extras, pic quality etc - but all essentially about the same thing.4 threads about 1 dvd = spamming IMO.Anyway,Im done with this, the powers that be have let it slide so whats the point in me arguing.

Standard sound levels are all over the place on this alright. Although, this may be due to them trying to accomodate the exceptionally loud gun-fire in the cinema mix. DVD version looks very poor, artifacting etc. I suspect that WB may have intentionally put out a poor quality transfer to push Blu-Ray.

I will have to get a look at it on DVD to determine the PQ but just on watching the BR, I thought that it was outstanding.

TBH, the best example of picture difference is actually a Harry Potter movie.
The Order of the Phoenix opening scene is overlooking a parched field, on a 42" telly the DVD looks bloody terrible but the Bluray is amazing (bad movie I know but great example of extra capacity of BR)

Seeing as my above post also references a WB movie, you could be on to something

I actually thought that there was something wrong with my telly when the DVD version was shown

Dolby tru-surround on my Onkyo 605 amp is spot on, picture quality is outstanding especially the IMAX scenes, don't know what all the bitching was about on some of the AV forums about the switching aspect ratios, didn't bother me in the slightest, and seeing as I saw this on its 3rd day of release in Vue cinema 1 and it looked really really crappy, it really looks fantastic in high def on my 42" Panasonic plasma, its my new demo Blu-Ray :)

I agree. The aspect ratio switching is very cleverly done. I suppose people who watch widescreen movies zomed in to remove the bars would notice a severe clip at the start but I can't stand idiots who do that anyway :)

As they are watching the whole movie incorrectly then they deserve to not enjoy it. It really annoys me when somone insists on watching something in the wrong aspect ratio just so they can fill the screen and make it 'widescreen'

That's exactly what I mean. I have a friend who insists on doing this just, as you say, to fill up the screen. I keep trying to tell him that that's not the way a film should be viewed..... Remove the zoom button from widescreen teles:mad:

    OR

make the industry standard and telly standard match

I think that it is stupid that in movies there can not be a single standard that a telly can be manufactured to.

Also does my head in, when watching telly, I keep having to adjust the ratio as each station insists on different broadcast levels

Doesn't your TV have an auto setting for different broadcast ratios?

Also a lot of the guys on the likes of AV forum are bitching about the quality of the non-imax scenes in the movie, believe there is a lot of edge inhancement and haloing visable and it shouldn't be classed as a top quality tier 1 release, have to say picture looks fine to me.
Then again if you look scene by scene comparison I can see some of their points are valid, still looks a hell of a lot better then DVD,

Alrite lads, quick question there for ye, my father rented a DVD from the local xtra vision last night, which is unfortunate seeing I was bringing down the blu ray today! However, I noticed that when I looked at the disc, all the writing on the disc is in Hindi (Indian). When I played the disc in the DVD player, the title screen that comes up says that the disc is for private home use only, at the bottom of the screen on the generic black screen warnings that come up, it says that it may be rented in India, and 2 other countries ONLY, there is no mention that it may be rented in Ireland and furthermore, another screen comes up stating that it is for private use only and not for rental etc etc.

Would I be right to bring the disc back to xtra vision and tell them that I want my money back for the rental?
