Go to start > Control Panel > Sound and Audio Devices. Under that you sould have to options. One should be speakers/headphones, the other should be hdmi or High Definition Media Interface or something like that. Set this one as your default. That should solve it for you.

Although HDMI can send audio and video signals in the same cable, few laptops that have HDMI connection can actually do this.

But in order to get the audio over to the TV you will need to use a different cable. Pretty much every laptop has a headphone jack which can be used to send the audio to your TV or receiver. Some HDTVs actually have a mini-headphone jack input so you can just buy a long 3.5mm mini-headphone cable with male connections on both ends. If your TV or HDTV does not have a mini-headphone jack input you can still buy the same cable but then you'll need the following 3.5mm headphone to RCA Y-splitter adapter to get the audio to your TV or receiver. Make sure you turn the volume all the way up on your laptop and make sure the audio is not muted on the laptop. You will more than likely have to tweak the audio to get it at the right level.

I have aCreative MP3 player that has a TV out connection and that's how I watch my avi files

When I change the settings above I can view and hear youtube or hear radio streams etc through the tv but can't get the sound to work on any movies that I have on an external hdd. I have also copied the movies to my desktop but still get no sound when I play

Has anyone any ideas what I may be doing wrong?

    Thanks

you could try getting a line out cable , run that from headphones on your laptop to your Tv input , its a little more hassle but it means proper sound , sound over HDMI is a bit iffy sometimes , i'd try changing the settings , then rebooting , if that doesnt help try checking HDMI settings in the graphics (nvidia/Catylist) control centre

Have you tried resetting the PC or the programs involved? A lot of the time when you change the primary playback or recording device it requires you to restart the program you were using. The device you are looking for in playback devices should look exactly like this device #2 here:

Check the sound options in the programs settings. It may not be set to the hdmi connection.
