i was running a scan for virus's and spyware on my laptop and the entire thing froze mid scan. I had no choice but to shut it down by pressing the power button.

Now when i turn it on the screen remains completely black and nothing appears on screen. its definately on as the fan is running continously...which it didnt before. and the power and wireless lights are on.

i dont mind completely resetting my computer, but dont know how to if nothing is appearing on screen. does any one have any ideas??

are you getting the bios screen on boot up? if you're not even getting that it could be hardware related it sounds unlikely though.

take the battery out, give it a minute and stick the battery back in, then plug in the laptop for 5minutes and try again......worked for me once...
have you anything plugged into it, modem, phone anything like that, plug them out of the laptop if you have...

    fingers crossed...:)

Plug the laptop into an external monitor in case the screen has a problem.

My other half has the some problem. They were installing updates, not sure if it was for windows or Mcafee, and it gave out. It is now doing the same thing as the OP's. Power is feeding in, but the screen is remaining blank. Fan is running. I doubt it could be the screen as it was broken last year and was repaired by the manufacturer. The laptop will be 5 years old after christmas though........has it just had its life?

How do you plug it into an external screen to check it anyway?

    Thanks.

there should be a vga port on your laptop so you can run that into the back of a regular computer monitor or some flatscreen tvs

the port looks like this 800px-VGA_port.jpg

Cool thanks. Any other ideas what it could be. Something tells me it aint gonna be the screen. Will try that anyway when i can find a monitor or a flat screen tv.
