I don't like the first one, it's lacking contrast and doesn't do it for me

I like the second one, the only thing is that the horizon is crooked, but that's easily corrected in post-processing

I agree with Kbeg on both points,
1st one could be a nice shot but the processing has drained all the contrast, maybe try something like Gorman Holberts Black and White conversion on it, could help.
I like the 2nd shot, The horizon is crooked, but its easily corrected to make a nice shot.
    Well done and keep posting

Two nice images and it seems to me that more thought has gone into the composition than the Dingle shot. So somebody is thinking and learning :)

The duck shot (:)) is excellent, interesting subject and well taken, slightly crooked horizon aside.

The pier is nice, well composed, but I think the conversion could do with with a bit more contrast to give it some more punch.

Thanks all, Dakar in particular thank you... it's great to have a comparison to my previous attempts. I'm taking all the feedback in and trying to put it inot practice before I get my hands on a dlsr after Christmas. Also hoping Santa has photoshop in my stocking so that I can try the technique you mentioned Al.

    :)

The first one reminds me of the baywatch pier:D
I like the second one. Though as before mentioned the horizon is crooked. Think you may be able to post process it on GIMP.
    Guys does gimp allow that?

Hey Jen23, Yup, gimp will allow you to straighten horizons, its actually very useful for it too.
Dreamer, if you cant figure out how to do it, drop me a pm, ill send you on a tutorial.
    Al

Jen and Al, thank you both. Have to say I've never heard of gimp but am downloading it as I write!

Mods - maybe it would be an idea to post the downloads that are available... it would be espically useful for newbies like myself.

Thanks again all, it's much appreciated *s
