Currently I have 15k (originally 20k) in an Evergreen investment fund with BOI. It's been in there for about 2 years and peaked out at 24k about 14months ago. Since then its been a slippery slope and I've lost 25% of my original investment.

I've consulted with my father who has money investment in a more high risk fund and he says he is going to stick it out. I'm not so sure and am going to see on a month by month basis.

Do you think I'm making the right decision or should I put the money in a savings a/c or something like that where it will increase albeit very slowly?

Or should I leave it as is and hope the stock brokers saying of "what goes down, comes back up" comes true.

On the bright side, in this past week alone, it has gone up the loss from the previous month (8%) :pac:

do you know what its invested in?

    what sectors and what markets?

well if you have lost 25% and you take it all out to put it in a deposit account, it will take quite awhile for your portfolio to bounce back to the original amount you put in.

can you afford to live without this money for awhile? is this your retirement money?

it all depends on you, your risk factor and of course it depends on the fund itself, is it properly managed?

if i were you id sweat it out, but obviously if i knew all the details i might say other wise

That's the brochure and its mainly invested in equities and property depending on the market (probably the main reason for it going down so much)

It was originally planned to be a long term investment for a deposit on a house and wont be needed for a while (seeing as im only 23)

Like I said I may give it a month or 2 to see how it fares over the christmas and then make a decision whether to move it or not

well at least its proportioned right for you, since your young you should be in equities and property, you can afford to take more risk than say your dad who should be heavily invested in fixed income in comparison to you.

what i dont like is that 20% of equity is in irish stocks! talk about being onto a loser in 2008! well since your young you will hopefully see the irish stock market bounce back before you need the cash

if you do decide to move it where would you consider moving it to? i would expect most managed funds would be looking at a similar kind of performance with all markets significantly down in 08, unless theres a fund out there who went significantly short this year in terms of its trading strategy

i wouldnt expect there to be much in terms of a recovery for your fund in the next month, there might be a slight end of year rally but i dont think the vitals are there to warrant such a bull run.

i predict that june 30th will be the turning point for this global recession, so until then i would expect your investment to be volatile. but of course this is just a general statement as i am unaware of the specifics of the investments made by the fund manager
