Probably a stupid question, but is it possible to play regular DVDs on a Blu Ray player?

    DVD quality at best.

you can't get more out of a dvd than 576p and plain old DD/DTS (DTS6.1 is probably the best multichannel audio mix, and you can get some very good LPCM encoded DVD Audio discs).

With Blu-ray players, you can upscale a DVD to 1080p resolution, making it look better than it would normally when playing it at its native resolution of 576i/p.

DVD will never look as good as Blu-ray but when upscaling, it can come that bit closer.
