    Hi.

I started an essay that is due in on Monday the other day. I had only written about 50 words and I saved it.

I started the essay this evening and was really proud because I had written 1000 words. Then I wanted to save it as I went along, so about half an hour ago I x-ed out of the window. I was expecting the 'save new changes' or whatever to come up but it didn't.

So instead my essay document has the 50 words I did the other day but not the 1000 words. There's absolutely no sign of it on my laptop at all. I shut my laptop down and restarted it and no joy.

Please can someone help me?? Please, I hope there is some IT whiz-kid out there.

I don't think I'm going to get the document back but I just don't want to believe it. I just want to cry!

If you're lucky, you may have auto archive set up and there is a .bak version somewhere.

Try searching the disk for it it may be saved somewhere else.

Alternatively, look for a file called "~$my essay.doc", this is the backup if there was a crash.

Just type it up again, it's just 1000 words ffs. That shouldn't take you more than an hour.

^^ It will take much more than an hour. I can't remember what I have written. And I have to go and look at all my books again for quotes etc. This is soo stressful.

Well getting stressed out wont help. You still have an entire day to do it and I'm pretty sure the advice you've been given will prove helpful.

    Moved from AH.

I normally clean up threads before I move them, but the oxymoron thing cracked me up, so I couldn't delete it.

I hope you get your essay back and other than looking for temporary saved version of the file I don't know what you can do.

In future however make sure you have the save back up options checked - Back up , Back UP Back up. A minimum of two saved versions is prudent.

While I'm at it I suggest that you get an external drive and back up all your college work at least once a week - it will save you this hassle in times to come.

    Overflowing with compassion there!! :)

To OP, hope you get sorted out with your essay.

Why are you rubbing the oxymoron thing in? You shouldn't be a mod. It's not funny and certainly not in the circumstances.

I have other work to do for Monday and I'm going out tomorrow evening for a concert. I guess I have to start the entire thing again. How unlucky am I? Ruddy hell.

Anyway thanks for the advice (well the constructive stuff), I don't know how to work all these back-ups etc. I've only had my laptop a year and it was very expensive.

By the way thanks to Dolanbaker, steve C, XJR, Jigsaw for your responses. Appreciate it.
I'm going to re-start it in about 10 minutes or so. Just need to give myself another bit to get over it.
Stressed out? Well I guess it's auto-pilot when your essay wipes. I wouldn't wish it upon you frada.

You're welcome and best of luck with it.
AH probably wasn't the best place to start that thread, sorry if the oxymoron joke offended you :)

In order to always create a back up whe you save select Tools / options from the menu and check "always create backup copy"

Thanks for this. Though I have 2007 word, so it is completely different. I am trying to find the tools menu thing and I can't. Any idea as to where it is located?

It happened to me a month ago when my 1500 word essay was corrupted the night before I was supposed to hand it in. So I did it again in two hours.

^^ mine is 2500 words. How did you manage to do it in two hours? I wish I could just do it. I'm always putting things off.

I just sat down and started typing. I remembered a lot of what I originally said and had my sources printed out next to me.

In Word 2007, go to the Office Button (Round button, top left corner), then Word Options--->Save--->Save AutoRecover Information every xx minutes.
