    hey guys
    hope all is well
i have a lapierre rcr 500, beautiful flat bar racer
i use it for commuting purpose, 7 miles a day kinda thing, in all weathers,

i recently degreased it using a fancy degreasing tool i got at cyclesuperstore.
after the degreasing session had removed all visible dirt and grit i sprayed on some wd40,

    this-was about 2 weeks ago.

i have been out in all weathers since

so today i just happen to look at my chain for teh first time since the degreasing and notice that its got a brown rusty colour on certain links!
    wat the hell happened??!

i wood really appreciate some help on this one

    thanks
    ed

This is normal. A degreaser is fine but the WD40 is too weak to use as a lubricant in this weather. Get yourself a good decent grade wet lube (the kind you drip onto the chain rather than spray on). White Lightning or something similar. Go to a bike shop and get something decent.

yeah, all you've done is degrease it twice :)

You used WD40. WD40 is not a chain lubricant, irrespective of conditions. The WD40 evaporated (as it does) and your chain rusted.

Hey there ed, Kenmc & Blog are right you degreased twice and didn't lube the chain. A simple mistake if you're not used to servicing a bike.

What I do/use to keep my chain clean is

    1. Clean the chain using muc off chain cleaner - I have no idea what is in that but it's fricken amazing and just get the can not the plastic cleaner attachment - it's a rip off. Follow instructions.

    2. Dry the chain, and I mean get it bone dry.

    3. Lube the chain as per instructions with Finish Line pro road or wet lubricant.

The chain will be spotless, and won't gather a layer of black cak as soon as you turn the pedals (so long as you give the mechs a clean also).

It helps if you get a Wippermann Connex link for your chain so you can just take it off and clean it.

I would say to avoid the white lightening original wax - i found it to be utterly useless in our current weather conditions, a bit of rain and it was squeak squeak followed by rust, even when applying it twice a week. If you lived in a dry climate it would be ideal for avoiding "chain stain" but its now.

Anyway I've moved onto the weldtite tf2 extreme wet lube with - its keeping the chain rust free and lubed, however after a week or two the dreaded black gick returned..............

Ditto, haven't had much luck with any wax based lubricant actually. Tried White Lightning and Rock 'n Roll extreme chain lube. Lots of squeaking. The Rock 'n Roll was better than the white Lightning though.

Now I just stick with Finish Line Wet Lube and Finish Line Dry lube. Haven't had much opportunity to use the Dry lately.
