    Hi

I've a Sony Nr38 laptop with Dual Core pentium 1.86ghz processor and 2gb RAM and an Intel Media Accelerator X3100 gfx card. I stream media from the laptop to my 360 through a wireless home network.

SD works fine. HD720 trailer for Star Trek (sweeeeeeeeeeet) works fine. However a HD720 conversion from mkv to avi (xbox non comprende mkv) ends up stuttering. It's not an on the fly transcode---the conversion was done before playback.

Is this a performance issue? is the processor/gfx card big enough? Would more RAM help? They play fine on my Laptop which is odd!

It's probably the wireless network. While in theory it should be fine as the wireless network has a much higher throughput rate than the bitrate of the file your trying to playback, in practice streaming HD should be avoided.

Other possible symptoms include the xbox 360 having trouble playing back the file for any number of reasons.

Try burning the file to a dvd to rule this out. Use an xbox compatibility mode in nero when doing this to make sure the disk is fully compatible.

Is it H.264 in the AVI file? If so there can be problems. Otherwise as Simi says it's probably a wireless issue.

I dont own a 360 but to put it down to the file:

    1) You didnt say weather the file plays on the laptop ok or any other machine that should be powerful enough to play it.
    2) Can you put the file on a memory key and plug into 360 and play?
    3) Sending data via h.264 will take up less bandwidth than same quality with avi possible bandwidth but rule it out via the 2 points above??
