Random though while trying to decide what to have for my Friday takeaway, how special is the house special? Its just really a load of meat and sauce, its like the leftovers from the last 4 sitdown customers! why dont they call it left-over chow mein??

and its not a house special, every chinese has the same dishes, its not like it is unique to that particular restaurant!

House Special is usally pretty good in my experience. Usually it just means chicken+pork+beef and sometimes +shrimp with your A-typical mix of rice and veg and a sauce (sometimes BBQ)

Damnit I want grits. I know it's got zero to do with chinese food but I've been oddly obsessed with the idea of grits lately. Overheal - does anyone over this way sell grits?

How special is it? Special enough to have you on the bog half of the next morning.

I dislike the grainy texture of grits. I wouldnt know where youd get them, but then I used to find little surprises here and there in Tesco: one time I even found a box of Oreos. Best Day Evar.

Specials have a pedigree, and pedigrees don't come cheap.

Dunnes sell oreos all the time. Weirdo. Are grits much different to pinhead oatmeal?

Also, will someone please buy me chinese??? Willing to give payment in kind....

My mate buys two kebabs from Zaytoon when he is out - one for that night, one for reheating the next morning/afternoon when he gets up.

    Checkmate.

Pfft Overheal man, loads of places have been selling Oreos for a long time now. I don't understand why they are so popular, I didn't find them particuarly tastey.

Whats the name of that Chinese restaurant in town that had the strippers in it last week? I'd say the house special would be great in there except the bill would be sky high:)

It's special in that most drunk Irish people think 3 different varieties of animal (and the odd king Prawn) all slopped in with a bit of slobbery stuff is NYOM.

Most places things are special for a reason.
A: You need to get shut of it before it grabs it coat and walks out itself.
B: It's cheap to prep so we can squeeze more €€ out of yee, and yee think "bargain"
C: Easy to make and popular.

Question you have to ask yourself is which of the above fits house special?
Is it easier to prep than a one meat dish? is it cheaper than a one meat dish? Can you fire anything "in a hurry" into it?

I generally avoid anything with the word "special" like the plague

To hell with my oversight. Im not usually one to go down the biscuit aisles - usually after the meat and cheese.

The house special is always at the top of the selection of
    your choice.
That's because the people who run the Chinese Take Away, know that we the Irish automatically think " lf it is more expensive , it has to be good".

I don't think I have ever seen something just called a "house special". In my local ones they will have different sections like

    CURRY
    house special curry
    chicken curry
    beef curry
    prawn curry.

The house special is top of every list and is just a mix of chicken, beef & prawns. Some also put that in brackets after.
