To watch one and record another different channel, I'm afraid you will need 2 seperate cards. However you can watch/record a DVB-S/S2 channel while also watching/recording the S-VHS input, despite what I was led to believe in the literature available on the internet. It may even work between the DVB-T and DVB-S/S2 tuners...but I suspect not.

    I have the hvr 3000

I use altdvb for watching and viewing. One thing you can do is record a program on one transponder, and watch another channel on the same transponder. I recorded bbc1 the other night while watching topgear on bbc2... bbc3 and 4 are also on this transponder

can watch bbchd and record bbc1 as there on the same transponder
i think the 4 itv channels are on the same transponder but not itv3
film4, channel4, more4+1 are on the same transponder

so its not completely impossible to record one channel and watch another with just the one card

    I don't have that card but I can't comment.

However, I have a Pinnacle 7010ix and I'm delighted with it. Can receive 2 feeds from the LNB on the satellite dish and 2 terrestrial feeds. I can definitely record any channel while watching any other.

You need a second card if you want to watch/record channels transmitted on different transponders, but I'd suggest that the second one be a cheaper card than the 4000. This assumes you've no interest in encrypted channels now or in the future (otherwise try to find out whether the rumoured CI/CAM support for the 4000 by Hauppauge, presumably by way of a daughtercard, is forthcoming).

You can record all four terrestrial channels simultaneously (if you're in the reception area for the DTT trial) using appropriate software, as mentioned in an earlier post, and hopefully this will still apply when DTT launches nationally. So if your second card is a cheap DVB-S card, the only facilities that you'll lose are:

    simultaneously watch/record DTT and DVB-S2
    simultaneously watch/record two DVB-S2 channels.

AFAIK, no freesat channels (or any other FTA channels on 28E) are currently being transmitted using DVB-S2 (no, not even ITV HD and BBC HD), so these are facilities you cannot use atm. Maybe if/when C4HD joins freesat...

I suggest you buy a DVB-S card for the second channel - by the time you need a better solution, the HVR4000 will be out of date and/or dirt-cheap.

BTW, a reminder to anyone installing two satellite tuner cards that they'll need two LNBs/cable drops from their dish too.
