    Hi all,

Recently purchased a 450d with 18-55mm and 55-250mm IS cannon lenses. I was just looking for some advice on a flash. I am looking so something reasonably priced and of reasonable quality to get me started. What features should i look for? I would imagine the main use for the flash would be for nightime/indoor shots of people if that information is usefull

    Thanks in advance
    M5

A 580EX or cheaper 430EX, a very good flash gun is most important. Both of these flashguns will communicate with your camera.

Hi, thanks for your reply! I was hoping to spend a little less than e200. are other flashes a waste of time?

Sigma make some reasonable compatible flashes.

Whatever you get make sure the head can bounce. Direct flash is to be avoided if possible.

You can get 430EX's off ebay for around 200. I just bought 2 of them for just over 200. Other than that if your on a tight budget try find some vivitar flashes.. You can get them for less than a 100 euro. A friend of mine uses them and likes em.

Vivitar flashes are recommended in Strobist world.

be very careful tho, alot of the cheaper vivitar will blow the hotshoe, I have a few for off camera shooting and there was a big warning when i was buying them about never to use therm on camera, saying that they were like 20 euro with light sensors...

Oh yes. There are various specifications of flash units. It is definitely worth to find out first what plarity and voltage levels are on contacts.

Read the manual of your 450D with respect to external flash control. FWIR, the 400D doesn't give you too many options on that front so getting a 580 might well be overkill.
