Loss of job

First of all I don't know where to put this. Well folks I was brought into the office last Tuesday and given my marching orders with a months plus a few days holidays pay. I was only employed in August and gave up a lot to get this job. It was in tourism. Now with business going not too well I was last one in and they have catapuled me off. I loved the work and the guys there though it was small and I simply don't know what to do. It will be hard enough to get work let alone in the tourism business. I am thinking of starting up my own tours company but with the economy the way it is I would need to win the lottery to start one. Any idea?? Any words of wisdom??

Don't beat yourself up about it. Start applying for jobs ASAP and enjoy whatever time off you have.

If you have the experience etc in the industry, would there be any benefit in going some where to the holiday resorts and setting up something over there?

have to agree with the fella above the likehood of finding a job in the present circumstance is hard and maybe its time to look at more qualifications if thats possible in your chosen career

I'm not an expert on the tourism industry but with the way things are going, I'd have thought that now is not the time to be setting up something like that. Unless it's some sort of niche market. Anyway, that's neither here nor there.

The most important thing is that you need to start looking for another job straight away. That old adage of "If you're in a job, you'll get a job" is oh so true. Don't necessarily confine it to the travel industry...if there's no other work out there, even flipping burgers in McDonalds would be good. Anything to keep some sort of money coming in.

I would strongly suggest looking into starting up your own business.Too many people look to others for help in these stuations....you can do it!
I did it and have no regrets.

Hello, am also working in tourism currently. there's a campaign in the new year to make Ireland more appealing to the foreign market re tourism. keep an eye on this area if you want to remain in the sector. I also fear losing position as am as yourself there not more than a few months. keep your eyes open as that is the predicted new bread winner for Ireland

One piece of advice I would give is this:

Finding a job is now your new job. Get up at 8am, go get the papers, check online. find all the ones you are interested in. take a break.

get on the internet and do some research into the companies you will be applying to. Make notes where a skill in your CV matches somethign they hold as a desired quality (leadership , team player etc)

    take lunch

Tailor your CV to each application. it doesnt have to be a whole new CV but if the job role requires leadership then word the CV so that your leadership experience stands out more, if it requires teamwork, then word it to show how you are a team player.

Apply to all of todays ads and file the ads away under todays date (if you're any good at access etc you can probably seet up a small database. you dont want to apply for the same job twice).

    5pm, time to relax.

its like working, just without the commute. Honestly, the worst thing you can do is fall for the inevitable lethargy that comes with unemployment as that leads to a lack of drive and this will ocme across in any interview you end up attending.

    just my .02 euro

Along with all the excellent advice above I'd suggest going into FAS and getting registered they were super helpful when I was outta work in August.

Super advice folks. U are dead right. Looking for a job is the new job! As well as some exercise and taking breaks the most important thing as well is staying positive and that something will come up/set something up or get that bit of luck if not this side of the New Year then afterwards. Thanks.
