Go see Fisherman's Wharf (Pier 39).Tacky but time consuming. The sea-lions are there too, always a winner.
Take a stroll down Market street and up to Union square.Either that or try Chinatown.Probably won't have time for both!
Try and get a tram ride (queues can be long).
If you're flying into SFO, then the Bart will take you to Market or Powell street stops. All of the above are accessible easily from there. Oakland is a bit further out, you've to get a bus to the Bart station, but after that it's easy.

From fishermans wharf hop on an open time tour bus and it will bring u across the golden gate bridge and back up to union square where u can jump off, have a look around and then get a cab back to the airport.

Easily leave the airport and be back with everything done in say 5 hours. Well worth it, great city

Agree with most of Dan_D! Dont try to do any of the obvious tourist traps. If its a nice day think about walking across the Golden Gate and then getting the ferry back from Saulsalito. Aternatively hit the North beach area a chill out in some coffee shops, get yourself a nice meal, etc. Its nice around there with Coyte Tower, etc

Yeah, the Golden Gate is a must.

Take the Cable Car from the Powell street (go to Blondie's pizza - buy by the slice - gorgeous) turntable to Fisherman's Wharf.

You gotta go to the Castro for a look as well! (famous Gay district)

You'll get a good view of the city from Coit tower.

Man, I miss that city. :o

I personally would skip Chinatown, I didn't think there was an awful lot to see. The main street is incredibly touristy, with shop after shop selling tacky crap. There are streets that aren't as tourist laden, but I didn't find it madly interesting.

I would do Fishermans Wharf/Pier 39 going out (yes it is also very touristy, but pretty and the sea-lions are a must see) and then Golden Gate Bridge going home. The views over to Alcatraz and the Golden Gate bridge from Pier 39 are amazing.

Just go to Alcatraz.... see the bridge from there!
