I'm travelling back from New Zealand in January and have 10 hours stop over in L.A. Airport. I'm wondering if it's worth my while leaving the airport to visit L.A. and if so what should I go to see.

    Welcome to Boards.ie :)

Grab a taxi and go to Santa Monica for the day. 3rd Street Promenade is a pretty cool place to spend a few hours and you'll be by the beach also. I wouldn't advise heading into central LA if you have a flight to catch later that evening.

    BTW, I just found this : http://www.starlinetours.com/LAX-airport-stopover.asp

Thanks for that. Going into the centre for a tour probably is risky. Plus travel tiredness might have kicked in at that stage so chilling out for a few hours by the beach sounds like a good idea.

You will see all there is worth seeing in LA in about 4 hours. I hated the place.

I have to agree with the previous two posts, LA is not the nicest place, far too spread out, traffic is a nitemare and public transport is awful/non existent so youll prob spend your 10 hours in traffic!!
If I had to recommend somewhere I would suggest Venice Beach!

I have to DISAGREE with the previous posts! There is a lot of worthwhile sites to see in LA, yes it is pretty spread out, but you could spend a couple of hours visiting Hollywood Boulevard/Walk of Fame. In realilty, you would have time to take an open top bus tour of the city, they check of all the main sites and take about two hours.

The beach is a good idea in theory (I would recommend Santa Monica over Venice beach) but would you then not be getting on a long flight with sand in your undercrackers???

Venice beach is no more than a 15 minute cab ride from lax.
Have lunch at one of the restaurants there and chillaxe for a few hours..

You could get the taxi to drop you off at the Ritz carlton Marina del Ray and have lunch there and then walk the 10 minute walk down to Venice beach and have a few beers whilst chillaxing watching the waves and the world go by.

Leave your bags in the left luggage store at the airport.

+1 You'll. love Santa Monica. Most of the areas in LA bar a few are an absolute dump but Santa Monica with 3rd Street Promenade the famous Pier and with Muscle Beach is pretty cool.

What I'd reccomend if you want to go to the beach is do the Beach bike rental service and cycle along Venice Beach or Malibu. Handy way of killing some time.

I was also going to suggest the Santa Monica Place for some last minute shopping but alas didn't know it was closed until next year:(.

Go to Universal, that flight is an over night flight if im not mistaken go tire yourself out! Nothing to actually do in Santa Monica or Venice other then chill..... Boring .....

Avoid Universal unless you're the type who enjoys flying thousands of miles just to go to an amusement park.
