Quote from Barry Devlin of the Horslips noticed on the democrats website

"Donegal was a very unusual place....
...You have a streak of independence up there. I call it the 'Texas of Ireland. 'You were and are, less conservative; in fact you are your own republic."

Yep, its a crazy place allright ;-)

Let me give the outsiders view who has never been there :)

Watch RTE News and Donegal is known for two things
    • Companies closing down and job losses
    • Boy racers getting themselves killed

Sorry, that's just how it's percieved

Hey we have Daniel O'Donnell as well!!!!!!!

    On topic;
That just sounds like one of those "X is the greatest town in the world" statements that touring bands make. We are our "own republic", well i think FF have completely forgot about Donegal, so maybe we should just set-up our own wee republic or maybe dictatorship???

So you're suggesting we set Daniel O donnel up as a dictator ;-)
I can just hear the national anthem now.

Im curious as to the point of this thread. OP maybe you would clarify please.

I would think Cork is the Texas of Ireland. Same sort of mindset, "peoples republic of Cork" is very similar to the way Texans view themselves as a seperate country.

Nothing deep or meaningful, Just to get people posting really.
Thought it was an interesting observation from Mr Devlin and the forum seemed a bit quiet.

Until I moved up here I thought the Corkonians were the only people who were delighted with themselves for being born in a certain county! How wrong I was... Meself and the other half went up around Fanad one day for a scenic drive. When I commented how lovely a particular view was, his response was "thanks". FFS, he took personal credit for the scenery!

I have to agree with you. I quite like Cork, both county and city, but my God the people are the most clannish you'll find in the country, and others I know who have lived there a long time find the same. They're grand once they let you in but it's a lot of work!

Is every county not proud of their own county? i would have through so.

Of course most people are proud of their county, but there's pride and obsession!

I would say Donegal, Cork and Dublin are the most proud of where they're from.

Everywhere I go, when I say I'm from Donegal, I say it with a huge smile on my face! :D Plus people are always friendly towards Donegal people more so than the Dubs and the Cork ones. We've got one of the sexiest accents and are of the most scenic counties in Ireland. Plus we have dozens of celebrities having holiday homes in Donegal.

    UP DONEGAL! :D
