The enduring woes of TelePaul

So about 6 months, a spot of flash flooding ruined my conservatory and took my limited recording set-up with it; soundcard, pc, monitors.

I replaced the lot and did a spot of upgrading at the same time; new and afster PC, forewire card with 8 pres, yadda yadda yadda, was feeling pretty pleased with myself.

About a week ago, my computer stopped recognising my firewire interface or firewire card. So I went and replaced the PCI firewire card...only to have it start smouldering on me!

So I replace it with a new PCI card, different motherboard slot. Success! Computer recognises it. Of course, it fails to recognise the firewire interface attached to it.

Pretty much ready to pack it all in. Hopefully Billy Bragg will offer some coded words of wisdom.

    No he's right , DO get a Mac ....

    However in the interim ...

I seem to recall a post that some Firewire Card chips won't work with some interfaces?

I know i was recommended to have a TI (Texas Instruments) chipset on my firewire card by the manufacturer, and they do seem to be the universally the best for audio applications. I thought that was more for latency issues than direct interfacing issues though...

PC's are junk for music so get a MAC and be done with it. :p

Sounds like your mobo and/or PSU is on the way out tbh. That or you just have some driver issues and you were incredibly unlucky in borking your PCI card

Did you check the compatibility stuff on the audio interfaces manufacturer web site, and their forums?

Tis true though Mac's don't have the issues that pc's seem to. They usually either work or they don't.

I'd agree with you if it weren't for the fact the PC was six months old. And so begins the long process of trial and error; going to get a new firewire cable tomorrow.

Did you hot swap firewire cables in/out of your pc or interface?

Because that can fry the firewire ports.

Firewire cables should only be plugged or unplugged when both attached devices are powered off.

    cheers
was always told it was fine to do this,(Apple recommend it) but after looking into it now it seems the are quite a few cases of hot-swapping affecting your firewire ports....
going to be turning stuff off now before disconnecting

Hmmm. Well it's possible, but now that I think about it, I would've only unplugged a cable when somethign stopped working...so I doubt that's the issue.

A big problem I found with windows and firewire is acpi. Windows will automatically assign IRQs to whatever hardwire it likes. This can mean that your graphics card for example can be on the same IRQ as your firewire card. Changing pci slots is a possible solution, or you can disable windows acpi, although that can cause other issues.

    Buy a dell

It IS a Dell. They're not the brand they once were.
