What's the best racing game ever?

Was just wondering, what game do people think is the best racing game ever on the PlayStation? That includes all PS1/PS2/PS3/PSP racing games.

My vote goes to Need For Speed: Underground (PS2). The season mode was simple to use, but the races were not. You really needed to work to win the later races. It was the frst racing game in which I was truly excited when I won a race. I haven't played all the newer ones, but ProStreet (PS3) was a real step in the wrong direction, when you look at what came before.

not a big playstation fan but NFSU2 was very nice however it was multi format.

no doubt the best technical racing game solely to the playstation is the grand turismo series

Gran turismo 4 or Gran turismo 5 prologue, if you count GT5P as a game. Until GT5 comes out :D

Meant to say, as long as it was a PlayStation game it counts. Doesn't matter if it was multi-platform or not.

my fav is burnout. not Paradise City (cause there was no multiplayer) but the last one on PS2. cant remember the name.

Theres gonna be an update next year for paradise. The "Party Pack", for when the action is on one screen, and paradise is a good enough game to get now.

Formula One on the original Playstation. It is to this day, the greatest F1 racing game ever made! EVAH!

Burnout Paradise. All the added dlc, the excellent graphics, blistering speed and flawless frame rate. Pumped more hours into this racing game than any other and I still love it.

Gran Turismo without a shadow of a doubt. It's hard to pick a single Gran Turismo game because they've been a consistent evolution. The newest one is obviously the best, but at the same time it hasn't been a large jump forward at all, but then it didn't need to be.

Gran Turismo 3 is probably the one I sunk most hours into. I remember being stunned when I looked at my fastest laps on a track one day, and among my top times were laps I'd set in four different years. Thats a lot of legs for one game!

Colin McRae 1- we rented a ps1 with a demo of gran turismo and colin mcrae from a magazine. colin mcrae was my first foray to playstation and i still play that game from time to time. Not Gran Turismo, ive tried liking gran turismo many time, its just too sterile and boring for me.

Burnout 3- arcade racing doesnt get much better, cant believe how crisp this plays and looks on PS2.

Need for speed Underground- i tried some of them and not others but none of the new updates come close to underground, the sense of speed and the sense of the modding scene was quite apparent, excellent game.

Ricky Carmicheal's Motocross- only played this on demo but ill chance it, excellent dirtbike racing game full of jumps and very impressive graphics from a PS1, still looking for this, ps1 disc or eboot, its hard to come by.

Could you class Driver as racing? i think so. the original game is by far and away the best and im sure if they released a back to basics sequel, it would kick ass.

Yeah, F1 '97 I think it was, and took up many hours of my time, back in the day. I'm hoping the new F1 game from Codemasters will be good.

GT3 A-spec. Played it again only last week.

    Class.

F*CK no, no way Gran Turismo.
    It's not a game.

It's an exercise in crap game design, mollycoddling tutorial B.S., absolutely atrocious AI, no difficulty curve to speak of, and it's all so boring, boring, BORING.

GT is what you give to a car BORE to fiddle about with until he goes home, and stops talking about CCs and BHP and tyres.

Then when he's gone, you fire up some Ridge Racer or WipeOut, or ANYthing with a semblance of FUN, and ram, powerslide & blast your way to victory.

Oh, and GT's tech? How long did it take them to have more than 6 cars on-track again?
Have you ever heard of a 6-car race?

F1 97 was just the pretender. This was the original and best:

Interesting stuff. I decided to do a table of what the current table looks like. But first some notes:
1: In the case of nuxxx, giggsy664 and 311, I interpreted what game I believed they were saying was the best.
2: In the case of corcaigh07, I had a random draw to determine your selection.
3: I didn't include Longshanks100's vote, because it was not strictly a Playstation game.

    Anyway, here's the voting table:

    3 - Formula One (PS1)
    2 - Burnout Paradise (PS3)
    2 - Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec (PS2)
    2 - Gran Turismo 4 (PS2)
    1 - Burnout 3: Takedown (PS2)
    1 - Burnout: Dominator (PS2)
    1 - Driver (PS1)
    1 - Formula One '97 (PS1)
    1 - Need For Speed: Underground (PS2)
    1 - Need For Speed: Underground 2 (PS2)

So, some interesting conclusions so far:

    1) With the exception of the Burnout series, the most popular games are, or have links to, PS1 games.
    2) Two of the games were the first in what would become a long string of titles.
    3) Newer isn't always better. Of the 10 titles featured, only one is the most recent of that game's series.

So keep those votes coming in, as we try to find the undisputed best racing game in PlayStation history.

Formula 1 '97 definitely. Arcade mode was brilliant, and it had the yellow Jordans.

Yeah. Gt4 was my vote there. Sorry if I got you confused.

How about a poll mabye? Determine which series is the best?

Sigh. Gran turismo is recognised as one of the best racing games ever, on any platform, simply because of its sheer realism. Sure, there is no damage, and yeah, it was 6 player races until recently, but so what? Its still a brilliant game, and you can't deny that. Go on pick up a ps2 controller and tell me TO MY FACE that you haven't ever liked the gran turismo series..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,959 ✭✭✭rizzla

Surprised no ones mentioned Destruction Derby 2, I had alot of fun with that game. Burnout Paradise is still the one I'd go for though.

6-car races & no damage is not "realistic".
Meanwhile, stuff like TOCA managed 4P (with 2 PS1s), or 1-2 DOZEN cars on-track.

It's a sh!t game btw due to, among other things:
    • Unnecessarily stupid license tests (take a car, hit X, brake after Y time. Take a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT car, and try to do the same, but not learn anything at all)
    • Superbly dumb AI.
    • No difficulty curve to speak of: either buy a crap car, cry as you get 5th place until you can sell it for 10% of its original value (now THAT's what I call depreciation!), and buy a good car. And proceed to win every race. By a country mile.

But to answer your challenge: I did like the GT series.

This was before I discovered good games.

Pokemon + Cars - Fun = Gran Turismo

Wipeout 2097, now that is a racing game. F-zero GX on the Gamecube pisses all over it though.

Burnout Paradise definitely gets my vote, play on-line nearly every evening.

When I first got my PS3 (Oct 07) got Ridge Racer 7 and have to say had great fun with it, it is, in my opinion well worth getting (tis only about €20 tops 2nd hand).

Ohh we already had this chat!
Nah I think the Formula 1 97 was the better all round game.

F1..97..sure it was a bitch to drive..but hey..those yellow jordans made it all the worthwhile.

Really hate the latest driving racing games...seem to be all about realism and not much fun anymore..
The last driving game I really enjoyed was PGR3/4 on the xbox..really wished the PS3 has these licenses as they're miles ahead of any other racing game on the ps3.

I dont know how true it is but I heard the Dev's from PGR were working on a Multi-Platform release.

I wasn't overly impressed with the PGR's tbh, Or Forza for that matter. Im not a PS3 fanboy but I am a GT series fanboy :)

Best PS3 Racing Game... Motorstorm Pacift Rift
Awesome graphics, physics and soundtrack. Multiplayer offline and online, with a huge selection of vehicles and tracks. Well-balanced and addictive.
Best PS2 Racing Game... Gran Turismo 4
Best in the series so far. Best selection of cars and customisability. Soundtrack is only OK but the visuals were spectacular.
Best PS1 Racing Game... Wipeout 2097
Still the best soundtrack to a racing game EVAR!
Best PSP Racing Game... Wipeout Pulse
A brilliant version of a Wipeout game.

Best Overall Playstation Racing Game... Gran Turismo 4
    Until GT5 comes out...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,959 ✭✭✭rizzla

See I never got the Gran Turismo bug. GT games aren't really racing games, they're driving sims, your opponents are more like stationary scenery that are happy to go around the track in a pack and never deviate from the racing line. I never found it challenging.

Haven't played GT5 prologue, is the AI still like this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,721 ✭✭✭Otacon

I have yet to play a racing game where there is, well, any AI. I have been driven into a wall a few times playing GT4 when overtaking, though I don't know if that was AI or the car trying to keep its line. But racing games for me have always been about the multiplayer (local).

Fully agree. At the risk of incurring "the wrath" by going outside the PS realm: the best time I ever had with any racing game (or any game for that matter) was with MarioKart SNES. Four of us at uni wasted countless unpreductive hours shaving 1/100 sec off lap times on Rainbow Road.

    Ahhh...isn't that rose-tinting lovely...
